I don't know if it is requested before, i would like to be able to attach i.e. youtube video on breeding reports like my post here:

http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... =5&t=38800

Is this a good idea?

Jools what do you think of? :-BD

I like the idea but it has some technical issues.

The first one is that the video is hosted on youtube (or elsewhere) and so I lose control of it (might be deleted, you might have other dubious videos which can then get displayed within a Planet page). For example, the current spate of abhorrent beheading videos virally spreading could appear on a Planet page).

Secondly, I just don't have the resources to start hosting videos on PlanetCatfish. So a third party (e.g. YouTube) has to be used.

Thirdly, and this isn't very important, you get the viewer revenue from YouTube rather than it going back into Planet hosting costs.

The only solution (and it's what we do for the cat-elog) is to host the videos sent in in a PlanetCatfish only youtube account. But then you have to send the video to me, I upload it, and then you link it using the long YouTube code. This is very cumbersome for everyone and would require a good days work from me to get it working before we could even think about submitting videos for inclusion.

I do see the benefit in terms of breeding videos but also in terms of fish and aquaria videos too. Perhaps there is a way to block youtube "this is also popular" type things - I will look into that.

In the meantime, you can add the youtube URL to the notes field I think?

This is in no way suggesting that we actually DO this, but it is possible to write code on our site that uploads a video to a youtube account in the ownership of PC (perhaps "planetcatfish_user_videos" to differentiate it from the main account for Cat-eLog videos, etc).

https://developers.google.com/youtube/2 ... _uploading

I haven't looked into it in depth, just suggesting that it may be possible to find a solution to the technical issues.

Now that PC has its own YouTube channel, and videos can be added to CLOG pages, is there any thought of revisiting this idea? BLOG videos would be very informative.

What I would be able to do is put links to third parties videos on the major platforms. Would you only want one per BLOG?

Perhaps I went over the top with links to videos on my BLOG for with (I think) seven videos... :))

That said, if simple links aren't good enough (as I do on that BLOG) and people want windowed videos visible on the BLOG, perhaps 2-3 videos might be welcome... one showing spawning, one showing eggs or parental care of eggs, and one of fry care (segregation, feeding) are some ideas.

That said, I wonder if the ability to include links (like we can do now) is sufficient? Of course, it wouldn't bring revenue to the Planet unless the videos are hosted on the Planet's own YouTube channel.

Cheers, Eric

I think it would be great to include them for viewing within the BLOG as they would be if I used the YouTube tags in a post.

I don't have a problem putting them on a PlanetCatfish channel, but it may cause fewer videos to be posted if people have to send them to an admin before they are uploaded to the Planet YouTube channel, assuming thats how it'd work.

Despite the current state of the pound, I'm not fussed about the revenue as while it would be nice, the work involved in uploading videos would be too much for the benefit and I don't quite have the time right now to build "siluritube".

If we have fields in each blog for the videos then I can show a thumbnail with a simple button to play the vid, if they're just in the blog somewhere then I cannot. It also means they're easier to remove if someone starts posting bad stuff.

I was also considering linking a blog to a forum topic where discussion can be had. You can upload pictures per various stages (eggs, fry etc), would it be too much to add a video for each?

Or what categories would you see useful for a video?

A video of each stage/age of fry might be nice but also perhaps unnecessary.

Here are my ideas for videos:

I thought also about adding a video for tank setup for spawning. That would be very helpful. But would that be better housed or linked under My Aquaria? ... on second thought, I think it's better here. People rearrange tanks and might alter the video for My Aquaria, but if a video is placed on a BLOG, hopefully it will remain unchanged.

Eric's idea sounds good, maybe 5 video fields.

1. Aquarium setup
2. Trapping/egg laying
3. Egg care, fanning/tumbler
4. Hatching/newly hatched
5. Free swimming fry

That'd explain more than the few words typically in a Blog.

OK, looks pretty good, will look into that while aligning it with what's already there. Realistically, probably not going to happen before I return from holiday - so maybe tail end of August once I've caught up.

Cheers,
