Would a "share" button on CLOG pages, CLOG photos (or forum posts/threads) be helpful?

Hi Jools,

Countless times I copy and paste links to CLOG pages and photos when sharing info on other social media platforms. How difficult would it be to add a share button for people to click once and share a CLOG page, CLOG photo (or maybe even a forum thread/post) to other social media platforms? Perhaps that would help draw traffic?

Just thinking out loud. Certainly not an urgent idea, as I can still copy and paste URLs on other social media platforms, although those don't always display nicely when I do (i.e., it might show a graphic for the PCF home banner rather than a photo of the fish I'm sharing).

Cheers, Eric

It's a per social media provider/action thing, so send to Facebook, or tweet to twitter are different things to implement. Let's assume you want to send to Facebook.

It's pretty simple to do, we had them in the past before Facebook got complicated/closed off to Google etc. That said, easy to do if it's a benefit to this site and its users.

The basics are here, it's a matter of laying out the pages to they are friendly to Facebook (and not screw up their google friendliness) - https://developers.facebook.com/docs/sharing/webmasters

So, as a first step, can you give me a "use case". That's techie speak for what are you specifically trying to do, why, and what do you hope the end result will be?

PS A thing that has LONG been on my mind is to make image montages of spawning logs or my cats collections for sharing. Maybe that's part deux...

Interesting. You learn a lot about coding when you see the hoops.

How would I use it? My past experience say primarily on FB, rarely on other platforms. Someone else on FB asks, "is this a snowball pleco?" I respond with yes or no, and I visit PCF to the snowball CLOG page, find a helpful photo, and then copy the url and paste it in a FB reply.
I suppose a narrow use, but it doesn't just show the image, it shows a graphic of the PCF website rather than the picture by itself.

Cheers, Eric

Seems individual pages, share quite nicely e.g. https://www.planetcatfish.com/common/im ... ge_id=1133

I will have a look at a species page,

I tried Hemiancistrus guahiborum on my FB page: https://www.facebook.com/Bekateen/posts ... 9606981298

I think what I find distracting is the large PCF tag that appears on the display, with the photo being thumbnailed and not even fully displayed (the pic is cropped left and right, up and down).

Again, this is one of those things that is not worth heavy coding in my opinion, and even with a "share button" might come out looking the same. In that case, there's no point in creating the share button.

Thanks for the consideration.

Cheers, Eric

How does that compare with a site that "you like how it works"? Can you give an example and I'll go look.
