Pseudopimelodus synonyms...

Post by MatsP »

I think we need to update the synonyms - Pseudopimelodus zungaro appear to be rather "popular" - there are, I think, three different species that have at one point or another been assigned that name.

I don't quite get what you mean, Mats, but the synonym "Pseudopimelodus zungaro" already sits in the data sheet of

I'd have to check, but afaik this synonym only belongs to Zungaro zungaro. If other catfishes were named as such, they are just misapplied names and therefore no official synonyms - implying they can't be added as synonyms.
You could, however, make a note in General remarks.

If I've misunderstood this [and admittedly, it seems like Fishbase doesn't list any synonyms for P. bufonius (opther than Pimelodus bufonius)], then I do apologise and look forward to knowing how I got this wrong...

And if I'm wrong, I expect we should add "Sometimes sold under the incorrectly used scientific name of P. zungaro, which is really a synonym of the much larger Zungaro zungaro" to the datasheet - unless we expect this to be a singular mistake, but I seem to remember having seen this before...

As I see it:
Top left: (a) species name
This species was at a certain point in time regarded as a synonym of P. zungaro
Bottom: current status of P. roosevelti (being a synonym for P. mangurus)

The problem you (and I) walk into is that one would expect that the name Pseudopimelodus zungaro (which is a synonym itself) would have been replaced by its valid name, being Zungaro zungaro.
But to be honest, that goes a bit too deep for me.
Maybe one of our learned members could explain?

Btw: what also strikes me is that FB states 1821 for Humboldt's description, wheras CoF has 1833

CoF actually has Humboldt 1821 and 1833 - I think there are two different papers.

I'm 100% sure the Green name is the "original described name".

But I see what you say, that almost all Pseudopimelodus got lumped as what we now call Zungaro zungaro, but then split (which makes sense as they don't grow to the same size and aren't patterned at all the same way...)
