Loricariidae issues

Post by Shane »

Couple of things.

1) Hemiloricaria/Rineloricaria: I have gone with Ferraris 2007 vice Rodriguez and Reis 2008. We can always change that later. Hemiloricaria up to date, I'll have Rineloricaria done today.

2) Would it be possible to split the Loricariidae page? It is just too big to keep scrolling through while doing cat-elog data entries.

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/fa ... amily_id=4

Maybe divide it to subfamilies/tribes?

Currently, there is LIMITED support for subfamilies in (some parts of) the Cat-eLog, and there are no admin functions at all.

We would have to fix (and fill in the relevant data) those bits before trying to split the Cat-eLog page...

ok. Anyway, Hemiloricaria (all 32 spp) and Rineloricaria (all 39 spp) are updated and complete.

Well, looks like I broke it. Loricariidae now cuts off at 999 spp.

The 999 limit, I think, is easy to fix. Going out for a bit, but I will have a look once I get back home.

That is precisely what the quick find feature is for. Haved you tried using that? Failing that we'd need a 2-4 hour enhancement to introduce subfamilies. I quite like that idea, but it's not key to getting this specific issue resolved?

I expect the 2-4 hours for subfamilies is a tad low for it to work everywhere. I think that's a good place to aim for, but more long term.

I use the quick find quite often, but it can be a bit annoying when you find "too many" (ok, so you can usually restrict it further by changing what you type in, but often means starting from scratch again...)

The bear was getting all the spp entered. If you decide to follow the 2008 paper we just change genera names. A lot less work than adding all the spp.
That is precisely what the quick find feature is for.
I'll play with it more, but it does not seem to be serving the function I am looking for. i.e. I need a list of all members of genus X to see if two spp recently described have been added (and to make sure I am not double adding as I did with

and

The list does pop up when you hit "add new sp" so I can always keep that open in a window to serve the same function.

No, I don't think so. We would need to do some enhancement and add a sub family filter to the family list all species page.

This would have an option of "unassigned" so as to deal with the sub family data yet to be entered.
MatsP wrote:I expect the 2-4 hours for subfamilies is a tad low for it to work everywhere. I think that's a good place to aim for, but more long term.
However, there was some pretty rough code I developed to wander over to fishbase and get the sub family from there (actually it was always my plan to expand that to author, year etc). It was patchy becuase (a) fishbase is poorly served and the http request often failed and (b) I didn't pursue it. But a bit of work (certainly a lot less than entering what sub family some 638 odd genera belong too) would see this work for described species. You'd then only need to manually enter data for genera that only had species that were not identified to species.

A nice wee project.

Any requests for specific genera (is that an oxymoron?) to update? I won't be home sick much longer #:-S

!@#*!! I didn't expect you to take me seriously!

Meantime, maybe a better answer from me would have been to say any species featured here that isn't on the site?

Please don't do another mega genus after Hypostomus, that's a killer. If you're looking for something a little easier, Balaji has some Batasio he'd like to add and they are new (to planet) species.

Yes, I did not plan to. The last couple of dozen Hypostomus entries have become painful.
After this I'll play with some other (smaller) genera.

Above said, I think Hypostomus will be well worth it given the large number of un-IDed spp in the cat-elog.

Once finished, I suspect several L, LDA, and Hypostomus sp "Rio Loquesea" will start matching up.

This is finished. Unfortunately we were only missing one or two Indian spp, not sure that will help Balaji. It was mostly SE Asian spp being worked on by some Ng guy back in 2001 and 04. :d
