Misspelled species name

Post by bekateen »

Hi Jools,

Today I added a species (), and then discovered after-the-fact that there is already a Cat-e-Log entry for the same fish under a misspelled name (). Prior to making the new entry, I ran a search of PC for the fish using the correct spelling and found nothing, so I was under the (mis)impression that the species wasn't in the Cat-e-Log (if I had known, I guess I could have simply changed the name... sorry).

I've copied all the date from the old misspelled CLOG entry and reentered it in the new CLOG entry. I've also copied the images from the old misspelled CLOG entry and placed them on the new entry for the fish with the correct spelling. That said, I discovered another error in the images (the ventral view is shown twice, but in one instance on the misspelled CLOG it is labeled "dorsal view;" I've removed it from the new CLOG entry).

Can you please delete the old misspelled entry from the Cat-e-Log? I would but I don't know how.

Apologies,
Eric

He he. This will take a little time to explain but I see the issue and will sort it over the next day or two. While you did make a small error in not spotting (probably my) original mistake in adding the species with an incorrect name (which is why we now have the check with other sources feature), there are a number of things which you wouldn't know about how this all hangs together which I will try to explain as I fix it up. 10/10 for perseverance mind you!

Cheers,

Jools

First off, I found the missing image and added it to the old record replacing the old wrong image. This is from the imagebase part of the ACSI site that may not longer linked but is still there.

Now I moved the two images in the new entry that you uploaded Eric to other species and added images to those species to overwrite the moved images. I just prefer recycling. A note here, if adding images downloaded from the site, then they have the "hosted by" watermark "baked on" and so the site will add another one at random to one of the four corners of the image resulting in two watermarks...

I then renamed the new entry to a species of mudskipper (just something I had lying around) and removed some of the data you added and processed the data submissions leading to this now having all correct info.

Finally, I renamed the original species entry with the correct spelling.

All good?

Sure, why not? LOL. I didn't realize that I had created so much work work for you. My sincerest apologies. :-)

Take home lesson is it is (more than likely) always better to rename a species than it is to recreate it.

As for myself, I'll think twice about such an action before I take it on in the future. Even before now, I wouldn't have dreamed of renaming a species in the CLOG if it already has registered keepers or registered breeders because I don't know if they automatically migrate (along with their own personal "My Fish" records) with the new name.

Given how messy this incident became, I can only imagine how much mess the other would be if done improperly.

Thanks again, Jools!

Cheers, Eric

Umm... I see only the old, misspelled name () in the Cat-e-Log. The correct spelling should be Trichomycterus spegazzinii. Is it simply that the corrected name isn't visible yet? Or did your correction not go through?

... Please disregard. Problem solved. :-)
