Phase 1 of the new fish room.

Post by CatWhat »

Now that we are settled into our new home I can finally commence the construction of my first proper fish room. I designed the stands to accommodate the tanks I already have with some room for expansion of course. The design is for up to four 55G, four 20-30G, five to six 10G and two 75G. I have a 135 but that has it's own stand, not in the pic. Any shelf that was elevated off the floor I re-enforced with 1/2" bolts along with the standard 4 2-1/2" deck screws per contact point, just to be sure. Also all the stands are 2" x 6" construction with the double 75G stand being 2" x 10".
I will keep everyone posted as I being to move the tank from the old house to the new.

Thanks for sharing! It will be really interesting to see the progression of the fish room you're building and the all plans you have, and how you do things, is there insulation behind the wood panels on the walls? I'm only just getting prepared to start mine, clearing out the room, then painting it, then building all the racks. I started a new job at an LFS last week, and they are clearing the shop of some of their unwanted tanks, so far i have 3 3×1,5×1 and a 4×1×1, and obviously other tanks at home, more to follow, its seems the job came at the right time, also with an opportunity to learn even more and gain experience , I will obviously have a display tank also. Have you any particular fish in mind yet.

Good luck!
Thanks Teresa

I already have most of the tanks setup and stocked in our previous home, but I do have room for expansion. I could probably fit another 4-5 10G (which is the plan for more breeding projects) one more 55G and another 75G. Behind the plywood is insulated with 4" of fiberglass batt insulation and 2" of SM styrofoam.

Thanks for sharing, from the shop now I also have 3 4×1.5×1 (ft) tanks plus the racks for all the 3. This is now one planned section of the room complete. I still need to decide what to keep in them!
Thanks Teresa

Looking good. :-) Are you going to use up some floor space in the centre of the room. With a room this size you easily could. I was going to have an island style set up in my fish room with breeding tanks on it for all round access, with the all equipment running the tanks kept underneath and lighting above.
Thanks Teresa

I may do an indoor heated pond setup down the road. But before that I have to make sure we have all the furniture in the finished part of the basement so we don't have too many obstacles while transporting through the basement door well.

This is a completely unacceptable answer! How dare you put real house needs before that of the fishroom? Just kidding of course, that is very good planning on your part, and probably something that could get overlooked by excitement sometimes. Looking very nice and clean btw!

Another quick video of feeding some of the fish. Had to feed the reticulated wood cats (Centromochlus reticulatus) to get them to come out some what. Also I wanted to show you guys how much the red eyed puffers love their earth worms.
