Would whiptails outcompete banjos?

Would whiptails outcompete banjos?
I'm interested in getting some banjos as well as some sort of whiptail loricariids (probably something like pseudohemiodon or other sand dwellers). However, i'm not sure how their feeding behaviors would match up. I know that both Xyliphius and most whiptails live in/on sand, and they both feed in the sand, but i'm worried that the whiptails could outcompete the relatively sedentary banjos. Thoughts?
