Cory and possibly Ich

Hi everyone;

A quick question. I noticed that some of my cories are flashing against the really fine sand that I have as the tank substrate. I can’t tell if they have Ich specks or if they are getting sand on their body. Regardless, I am wondering if you can let me know the safest way to deal with a possible Ich outbreak. I have Kordon rid-Ich that works really well with my goldfish but I am not sure If it’s safe with cories who don’t have scales. Thank you in advance.

Hi Mlou,

I've never tried Kordon Rid-Ich on corys, at least not in recent memory, but I've found good old-fashioned Nox-Ich to be perfectly safe with corys.

Good luck,
Eric

Thank you Eric. I dont have Nox Ich but I have both Rid-Ich by Kordon and Ich-X that Cory at Aquarium Coop uses. I am just not sure which one to use and whether corydoras might react badly to any of these. But according to Cory, he has not seen any adverse reaction to Ich-X and his company sells it. So I might just go with that one though I have a bottle of Rid-Ich open already. I think they all have the same ingredients so I might just be overthinking it. The corydoras are the 10 green lasers and the three eques that I have in a 29 gal and so I want to make sure it's safe. I am not even sure if the fish has any issue as they dont look like there is any sort of real fine white dust....maybe just the fine sand from SuperNatural that I use in the tank that they are trying to get off their bodies as they are always digging. Can one treat ich prophylactically? Thank you !

Not that this will help. but i am a big fan of the Torpedo Beach SuperNatural. I chose it because it had a larger grain size which makes it easier to vacuum up poop as opposed to finer sand. I also chose it because the Admin on the wild catfish site said it most closely resembled the substrate in the wild where Altums live and I was getting into Altums. My corys love it and I never see any stick on them.

Here are the ingredients for Ich-X: For Aquarium: Water, Formaldehyde (<5%), Methanol (<2%), Malachite Green Chloride (<0.1%)

Here are the ingredients for Rid-Ich Plus (their current version of rid ich): contains 4.26% of formalin and 0.038% of zinc-free chloride salt of malachite green.

While I can refer you to a review paper on more Ich treatment than you can imagine. Formalin and malachite green are still considered the most effective treatments as far as i can tell. I used to use Quick Cure by Mardel. it contains the same two ingredients. I am not sure it is still made and I have inquired with Fritz to let me know the status.

Edited to add this info: Here are the ingredients for Nox-ich:
Active Ingredients:
Sodium Chloride......................0.50%
Malachite Green......................0.50%

So instead of Formalin they use salt.
What is most interesting about these three drugs which essentially contain the same ingredients is that the dosing/treatment directions are different for them.

That Ich article tells how the treatment was administered, at what life stage it was able to kill the ich if it was an effective treatment. There are lot of ineffective treatments covered as well as ones which do work. here is the link to the paper: [url]http://dspace.stir.ac.uk/bitstream/1893 ... ew.pdf[url]]
