Microglanis iheringi

Post by fishguy1978 »

Picked up 4 Microglanis iheringi, I think. I was also able to get live black worms too. And these guys were munching immediately.
I do have one more that is an adult measuring ~50mm. Would the adult try eating these little ones?

They look great. As for your concern, I see no reason to worry about the big one eating the smaller ones. I'm now up to sixty of these. Some were bought tiny and some big. I haven't lost a single one yet.

Good luck with them.

Cheers, Eric

My M. Iheringi are in with my BNP pair and their spawn. I fed Bug Bites pleco sticks and watched the M.I. viciously attack food way to big to fit in their mouths. I did add some pellets that were more their size.

They are pigs! Try them with freeze dried or frozen brine shrimp, or frozen blood worms. (or live worms. ;-) )

I have the frozen treats for them and live black worms. I am trying to go easy on the live as I want to get a sustainable culture going.

I have known nobody who has a sustainable culture of live blackworms. I know plenty of people who can keep them alive (myself included), since they do well in a sand or gravel bottom tank with a sponge filter. But their reproduction is insufficient. I've seen a few videos of people saying they are culturing the worms, but they measure the success at a level where they count individual worms (like, "I've gained 100 worms"). That is not sustainable when you (I) are/am feeding 16 ounces of live worms per week.

No matter, any system that helps is a success. Good luck!

Hi all,

They aren't productive at that level, but I've had a culture for ~10 years that I harvest every week and the thing that makes the difference is <culturing them with Hornwort> (Ceratophyllum demersum).

I've never tried any of the <paper towel methods>, but the linked "aquarium tidings" thread mentions plants in method 2.

I now culture Crangonyx pseudogracilis in the same Asellus/Lumbriculus buckets.

cheers Darrel

Thanks for the info. The video I saw before used cardboard and cucumbers. I don't recall where I saw it, but that wasn't good.

As far as long term culture, I've got tanks with ongoing blackworm populations. They breed fast enough to survive constant grazing by tank fish, but not enough to be harvestable.

Cheers, Eric

Moved all the M.I. into the same tank as the Banjos. I had one get its fins caught in the net and had to use scissors to cut the net apart to remove it. I am still amazed at the size of mouth these little guys have. They remind me of flathead cats in miniature.

I think they have. I have them iny 29g planted tank with just a pleco for now.
Do you notice any territorial aggression? There appeared to be some fighting over hiding spots when I introduced them to the new to them tank.
I just finished turning the eight tanks into a combined system.
