Awesome fish, good luck with your breeding. I am only keeping 1 syno at the moment but he is my favorite fish.

Yes...i do believe they're grandiops as well...jus needed confirmation. From what i undsrstand, the majority of my group is 3-4 years old. All are about 6inch or so.

My camera is cracked on my phone....but i have some good news ladies and gentlemen. WE HAVE CATFISH BABIES!!! synodontis grandiops. From what i can see..4 fry from one female aulonocara baenschi. I knew i was seeing breeding behaviors starting to happen within the group. Im so excited!! I wish i wasnt the only fish nerd in my household lol. Sharing with you guys before i tell my wife lol sorry for crappy pictures

Yes. Theres only grandiops in the tank, and the peacocks. I have about 7 lucipinnis in another tank. I watched my dominant male sunshine spawning with one of his females...the syno's kept charging in. I watched the whole thing and didnt even catch the "switch" lol.

I don't know that there's anything useful in it for you, but cool to see more attention given the genus in the scientific literature.

I lost one of the fry while i was at work..it was the smallest of the 4. I assume one of the others ate it, as im almost positive it couldnt have gone anywhere else lol The other 3 are doing good so far..i swear theyre growing already

Good news- I have not lost anymore of the fry, still have 3 alive and well. They are definitely growing and eating baby brine shrimp and the fry food made by Hikari. Crazy how much faster the catfish fry grow then the aulonocara fry of the host cichlid. I hope that the catfish continue to breed now that they have started...i would love to have a tank full of the fry. Lol. They are basically exact duplicates of the adults, jus tiny lol.

P.S. SORRY FOR THE CRAPPY PICTURES..I CRACKED THE SCREEN OF MY CAMERA.

Well, they did it again!! Lol. Jus stripped another female Sunshine Peacock and found 5 syno eggs...3 days later i have 2 survivors. I do think i will have to cull one, as it looks to have a deformity. The first fry i got are now getting big and eating everything in sight. I will post pics soon as i can.

Eric, I have pulled them from cichlids with cichlid eggs as well, they certainly do parasitize the cichlid eggs, sucking the yolk to a shriveled husk and then go for the fry.I have photos somewhere with the eggs.

Of course thats what they are 95% of the time when called multipunctatus.

Hey guys...so the this is the best pic i can get right now. The two smaller ones are from my own spawn. The other is a juvenile i purchased before my group started to breed for me. They are still not getting a lot of fry in the cichlid spawns...but i do have some grow outs that will be getting to spawning age soon. Hoping to switch up the hosts to a younger group of cichlids, which may be a bit more naive and equal more synodontis eggs. The last two pics are of my most recent stripping of female cichlid..there was 2, but one seems to have escaped the first night.

Hello everyone....hope all are well. Jus found another 3 synodontis fry in another female. I was almost ready to give up on hoping to find catfish fry recently..as ive had about 3 batches of cichlid eggs without any. I am thinking that the "host" cichlids are starting to catch on to the "switcheroo" hahaha. This trio came from a younger female. Actually her first spawn. I have been having success with my Albino Bristlenose recently tho...the male is guarding some wigglers right now. The breeding aspect brings so much more into this hobby. Hope everyone is doing well

I separated the catfish from cichlid fry, crazy how fast they grow at this stage.

Even at such a tiny size they do like something to hide in, I used snail shells from mystery snails, makes for a good photo as well.

Thanks for feedback and tips. I actually put some Java Fern covered rocks and the huge pothos cutting in with them today...i will try to find some shells on payday lol

Dont get the huge decorative shells you see in craft stores, they are too big, Just get mystery snails and raise up you own shells.

Heres a few pics i took today... The first one is of a juvenile synodontis that i bred a month or two ago. The rest of the pictures are of the most recent batch. I have added some rocks with java fern attached, as well as some anubis that i have removed from mother plant. .....yet they prefer to be up near the lid of the critter cage i have them in. They will be moving into the grow out tank....as soon as i get rid of some ancistrus grow outs

This picture is from the waterchange but i wanted to show this one seperately as the two catfish in this picture are the last batch i have been growing for a month or two. I am really in love with these fish...one of the most rewarding fish i have kept so far.

Here is a few more pictures from today, jus after feeding. You can see where they spend majority of their days lol. I have placed 3 black pvc "structres" beneath my rockwork. They love to hide when the lights are on

Pretty excited to see a new synodontis fry swimming around my tank this morning. Haha. This one was the 1st and only one i did nothing to help start. I usually strip my female cichlids...so i end up with fry from both fish. This time, with Xmas so close and just switching jobs a month ago...which involved switching from days to afternoons/nights after 5 years of straight days...i jus didnt get a chance to strip the holding female. Well, this morning (actually 130pm haha) i saw a tiny catfish swimming in with the adults lol. I think this guy was the most rewarding one of the 7-8 i have bred so far, jus because i wasnt expecting it and definitely didnt expect him to be able to survive in the display tank. I will snap a picture or two later on/tomorrow. 3pm -130am is a crazy switch for me...but my 3 day weekend is a blessing. Lol
