Moving Large Brown Bullhead

Post by pighair47 »

I am planing on moving my brow bullhead to a larger tank, he is around 12" long or so. how do i go about catching the fish for transfer? he is very skittish when things enter the tank and will swim away with great speed, i don't want to injure him or myself trying to catch him, i know their spins contain a mild venom i would rather not get stuck. Last time i moved him he was smaller and was able to herd him into a cup for transfer.

Can you repeat the herding strategy with a larger cave-like container?

that was plan a to catch him, i was just curious if there was another way. i have the largest net the petco stocks near me irc its 6 x 4, i just fear its too small of a net, would using a fishing net be a good method or would i risk damage to the fish? i have had this cat for 4 years now and caught him as a minnow in a minnow trap, i would hate to harm him at this point.

if you're considering fishing nets you can get rubber ones that don't scrape off the fish's slime and injure it.

I don't know if this will help. It is a vid in German. Yhey are moving big fish from an in wall tank in one home in a van to a huger tank in another home. At about the 3:30 mark the fish they catch is transported in a wet towel.You can see how the catch and handle them.

The tank from which they are removing the fish is actually twice that height, it was taken half apart to remove the fish.

You can order all types of nets on line. The sizes and shapes are endless. That said:
Don't know how much time you have or how big your tank is, but you could try: putting a large net at the bottom of tank put a favorite hiding 'log' on the net. Once the fish is comfortable hiding over the net, under the 'log' pull the net straight up with 'log' and fish in it.
If you are pressed for time, you could also just do the 'double net dance' removing much of the furniture in the tank which often forces the fish to hide under the one thing you left in the tank and you just have to close in on the cat. Good luck!

I probably had a smaller space to get him out of, but when I recently had to move a brown bullhead I was housing temporarily, I used a large collander! It worked great, especially paired with something else to usher the fish in. (I used a bucket lid.)

Though my fish was very people friendly and used to hands in his tanks, so he was very easy to work with. Not sure it'd go as well for a more skittish fish. ^^;;

Where he was in before I had him, they had big rubber nets they caught him with, as ThePsychotiCatfish described above.
