Combining Syno species

Post by FinsandFeathers »

Hello.
My wife and I would like to combine a couple small tanks into one large, planted tank; probably a 135 gallon.
In one smaller tank, we have a group of several Synodontis petricola; in another, we have a group of Synodontis nigriventris.
Is it possible to keep these two species together in a heavily planted and decorated, 6 foot long tank?
Would interspecies aggression be an issue? Would inter-breeding and hybridization be a worry?
Has anyone kept these two species together?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would imagine the pH requirements would be different, as petricola are from Lake Tanganyika and nigriventris are from West Africa

Synodontis nigriventris are typically placid in my experience, my group have lived with ; ; .

There is a certain degree of unpredictability no matter what you do in our hobby but I'd combine them and expect no problems.

The water in both your tanks is probably the same anyway, is it not?

They should be fine together. I have S. lucinpinnis in a riverine type tank with my monster 9+" TL S. angelica and they get along fine. The S. lucipinnis are okay with a pH around 7.0. I imagine the S. petricola would tolerate water around that pH as well.

pH 7.0 is not okay for S lucipinnis; they can handle it, but it's not what they desire ;)

S flavitaeniatus could also be a very nice combo with the nigriventris, both species are rather calm
