L134 Sexing

Post by calceobleu »

Hello, I recently acquired 4 wild caught frogs, am interested in your guy's opinions on the sex? I know it can be extremely difficult to sex them and the photos were rushed because I wanted to get them into the tank as soon as possible so I don't expect much, but anyone have any guesses? The 3 larger ones are around 3.25", while the smaller one is 3" so I believe they are around adult size. I have also noticed especially at feeding times the 3 larger ones tend to fight with each other and flare up along with occasionally chasing each other around the tank, does this mean that they are all males or do both genders do this? Any input would be appreciated, thanks a lot!

I don't know that I could sex them reliably if I tried. When mine are in condition, the males develop odontodes along the caudal peduncle. I don't see any of them in these photos. But they might just be out of condition.

Separate topic - your post indicates you're in the "Bay Area." Where abouts? (if you don't mind me asking) - I'm in Stockton.

Good luck with this group,
Eric

Welcome to Planet Catfish!

It's been years since I have kept these, from the look of them they need some time, probably ~3 months, maybe more to settle in and put on some weight, after that you may notice differences between the fish without having to pull them out of the tank.

Take a look here, , there are pictures showing the differences between the sexes, which might help you out.

Good luck with them, if I have a spare tank in future they are certainly a fish I'd like to keep again.

Hi Eric, I'm in Mountain View :)
Also, about their behavior is it true that only males will fight with each other or will females sometimes become territorial as well? They definitely do have a lot of personality and don't seem to be very shy like some other plecos.
Here's a pic of one 2 days after:

Mountain View is my back yard!

I can't say that only males fight. I don't see much fighting in my group, which I've had for 4 years.

Cheers,
Eric

The fish in your second post looks much better, they must have been stressed from transportation in the first post.

Maybe it won't be too long before you can distinguish between the sexes.
