Congratulations. Piebald and "normal" parents, and you get albino fry too? Dang your parents are a mix of genes. :))

So, the female isn't a standard, she's a piebald too. Maybe? From the results of this cross, it appears that both of the parents are heterozygotes ('carriers') for the recessive albino trait, and their progeny display perfect Mendelian inheritance, with 75% of them being pigmented, and 25% albino.

In other words, they carry the same albino genes.

After all, what is an albino gene? It is a gene that makes one of the proteins which are needed to create melanin not working. It´s the absense of a good melanin gene.

Imagine 3 proteins are needed (I don´t know how much there are, but it is more than 1). Then one would need 3 working melanin genes, and it is possible one albino has the first one incorrect, and another albino the last one. If you pair these, all offspring would be dark.

a1A2A3 would be an albino, just as A1A2a3. But here the offspring has A1A2A3. And a1A2a3, but albinism is recessive.

On the other hand, it could also be one both erroras are on a1, but on another place in the protein. In such a case a1´a1´´ would still be an albino, as both genes produce a not working protein.

So your little experiment did reveal another piece of information

I moved the fry into a 29g with a bunch of madrona branches and alder cones over the weekend. Unfortunately, the move did cause the loss of several fry. I changed out the heater as well as one fry had become trapped in the safety cover.

My fry continue to grow. I am having to do 50% water changes daily with poop skimming with how many are in the tank. The male is sitting on another clutch that should be hatched by now. Just waiting for him to release the fry into the 90g as he has taken up residence in one of the madrona log caves.

More spawn from my first pair removed 07/08Nov. Coworker gifted me his freshwater fish as he transitions to saltwater. Included was a very nice looking standard brown male with some reddish highlights and an albino male. Tuesday, 08NOV, I added them to the 120g where I have an albino female from my pair. 09/10Nov noticed the male trapping a female but did not see any eggs figured they were quarreling over hiding spots. Today, 11Nov, he is sitting on a nice size clutch in what I would have thought a less than ideal cave. He is unable to enter fully. Pictures to follow.

One of my albino growouts is malformed. It wasn't obvious until it gained some size. Now I have it in my planted 55g and will not breed it. I don't have any clove oil to euthenise it.

Hi fishguy1978,

Glad they are coming along. Soon you'll have fry all over the place! :-)

Although BNs are very fertile and no intervention is necessary, with almost all my other pleco species, I transfer the babies before their yolk is gone to a basket and begin feeding immediately.

Cheers, Eric

I think I may be to late. I checked this morning and the fry may have moved. There are 2 sev's and 3 g. brasiliensis and a stripped rafael in the tank so not much chance of survival.

I bought some Morning Wood Repashy to try. Decided to go with the largest container for economy of price per ounce. Mixed up 4 tablespoons and cubed it for use. I used a 1:2 ratio but I might try 1:3 next time. Definitely smells like alfalfa.

Repashy is good. Myself, I usually mix 1/4 cup morning wood with 1/4 cup soilent green. Pour cooked liquid onto a dinner plate to gel, then cut into little squares. Freeze them in a single layer then break off pieces to feed over a few weeks.

What is your mix ratio of powder to water? I thought I would be able to pour what I mixed up but it was to dry. The L104 devoured the cubes I dropped in last night, pleco fry were still working on theirs, cherry shrimp didn't appear to have touched it, the glass shrimp were green, and my silver dollars are undecided.
My plan is to mix up and freeze once I get the ratios figured out.

Fry are definitely chowing down on the Repashy. L104 appear to be as well as the cubes are gone. My SD are sampling it but still don't know if they like it. My chocolate Cichlid doesn't spit it out.

Was moving stuff of the desk and found a BNP fry left over from the move on 26DEC just chilling in the bottom of the container. Moved it to the 29g planted tank as it needs some algea removal.

Also great for Repashy are icemaking trays designed to make small ice cubes. You can freeze several months worth over a couple days and zip lock bag the cubes in the freezer.
