What L-number is my pleco?

Post by SjefIH »

Hi.

This pleco was sold to me as a L-059, but I don't believe that it actually is. I want to know what species it is as to better be able to take care of it in regards to tank conditions etc. The spots are orange, don't know if it's clear from the photos.

I'm sorry for the quality of the photos, it's pretty shy so far and these are the best ones I've been able to take so far.

Could anyone help me with which species this might actually be? I'm really scratching my head here.

Seems like that might be it! Some of the pictures are very similar at least.
I'll see if I can't get a closer look at mine tonight, they seem to be masters of hiding. Not even a lot of spots to hide in this aquarium, just one rock with some roots, they seem to vanish just the same though!
I might just be used to my bristlenose plecos, who seem to be out and about constantly :icon-rolleyes:

Well, L4/5/28/73 looks very, very similar!

I went ahead and moved a root (saw his/her tail sticking out) to snap a quick picture. Turns out, that's not all that easy. So I caught both of them, which must have stressed them out. Their color is very dark when they're comfortable, and seems to be more of a greyish striped when stressed out. The pictures where the pleco is just laying at the front if the tank is also right after releasing them back, so it's got the 'stressed out' color.

I couldn't seem to snap any very good pictures (phone camera is crap), but maybe it could help confirm what they are.

I appreciate all the help you guys have given so far, thanks a bunch!

Seeing as I don't even know what gender they are, thanks I guess?
If any breeding happens it's pure coincidence. I just thought the fish were cool so I bought two. 😅
