Brochis ID and gender confirmation

Post by FJB »

I could use some help confirming the id of these 2 corys (Brochis), and opinions on genders, if at all possible.
I realize the single image may be far from sufficient, but is what I got right now. They are both young, still growing.
I believe they are both Brochis splendens, based on shape and count of rays on dorsal fin (~12). The shape of the dorsal fin is slightly different among the two, which could be due to gender, and their overall coloration is also somewhat different. The later may just be individual variation, but could also be gender-related?
Many thanks!

Hi FJB,

If they are young, they may not be reliably sexable. If they are large enough to sex (FWIW, I can't tell in this photo if they are, but IF they are...), then the fish on right is probably a female based on the contour of its pelvic fins. The fish on the left? I can't see enough detail to confirm sex one way or the other. As for ID, I'm not great with Brochis, but for sure, is far and away the most commonly sold in the USA. So unless you bought them as something specifically different, you probably got Brochis splendens.

Cheers, Eric

Thank you Bekateen.
I will try to get better images and post them. They are not full grown, as they are still about the size of C. aeneus, and they can grow larger than that. Cheers!
