Mystery Pleco

Post by Pleco007 »

Hello I recently received an order of 20 WC L260 in the 2 inch range. After receiving them I only see three that look to be L260. Not sure on the rest. Most have very dense patterns, but don't resemble L260. My thoughts were L411, but when compared to the L411 I have, they look different. Their pattern seem much too dense at this small size to be L66. Any thoughts? Thanks

These could be several things if the shipper was as unreliable to ship these as WC s. is a good idea for most of them, but they could be a mix in there. The striped Hypancistrus from the Lower Xingu, for example, are famously variable.

What's their backstory - I'm guessing we don't even know if they are WC?

Unfortunately all I know is they are wild caught. I'm not sure if they were collected in the same area as L260 or if they were mixed in later.

Hi,

1, 3, 4, 5 and 7 are L 66, or at least this is the closest name for them of the ones we use in the hobby. They look a lot like the ones we collected in front of Altamira back in 2014, which are said to origin in released specimens from several locations of the river.
2 is actually L 260
The circled ones in 6 are L 260, not entirely sure on the larger one in the top circle though.

The differences show especially in the head morphology, also check the eye size and colour for example. They do need good feeding though, none of them seems to be really fit.

Wild L 411 are pretty rare lately, the distribution area is not commonly fished for in anymore.

cheers
Daniel
