Can you help me ID this hoplo?

Post by bekateen »

Hi all,

These hoplos were wild-caught in the Rio Nanay near Iquitos by a friend of mine. They were mixed together with a group of other hoplos, including and a few very small .

The largest is about 5-6cm SL. The smallest about 2.5cm SL. I believe these are or , but I can't decide which. And if Lepthoplosternum, I'm unsure of the species ID.

According to Specieslink.net, Callichthys callichthys is everywhere (practically), so that's a definite option. Both and are found in the same area. If they are Lepthoplosternum, I was thinking they are L. altamazonicum, but the caudal peduncle seems to be too narrow (vertically) to be either of these species.
Can you help?

Thanks in advance, Eric
