Can someone tell me what this is?

Post by 2manytanks »

This little guy was labeled as a butterfly pleco, but doesn't match any of the pictures of one here. He is very flat ( he does look just like a flounder, which according to this site is another name for a butterfly pleco, so at first I thought he was labeled correctly at the store, but he has no discernable pectoral or dorsal fins, like the example pics show) He spends pretty much all his time attached to the side of the tank, and has shown no interest in any of the food I have offered him so I'm very interested in finding out what he is so I can figure out what to feed him.

Thanks! Amy

This is not catfish. It's a hillstream loach. Most likely Beaufortia kweichowensis.

Thanks Silurus! I apologize for asking about a non catfish here, I was going on the name labeled at the store (and my non-experience with catfish!! :o ). Thanks so much for your speedy reply, I'll head on over to a loach site!! :D

just from the photo I'd guess it to be a Gastromyzon, the mouth looks too small to be a Beaufortia kweichowensis. I keep 1 Beaufortiakweichowensis and 2 Gastromyzon together and other than appearance they seem to have the same requirments.

It's the other way around. Gastromyzon have wider mouths than Beaufortia.
