I wish I getting more creative but this guy goes by the common name Coal Catfish. I was pretty sure you wouldn't make it that easy.
Oops.. didn't notice that  ... but yes, that would have been a bit too obvious. :-)

i) I'm not a piece of coal, I'm a catfish.
ii) South America is the correct continent though.
iii) I'm not a disease which causes black skin lesions, I'm a catfish.
iv) Despite my name, I don't much care for thrash metal.

iv) Despite my name, I don't much care for thrash metal.
I should be able to get this one but even though Arius is not SA, there's band names and part of them in at least 300 other catfish...grr, latin-loving medieval metal heads...
?
If that's right, then that means you know of the band 'crowbar' and I'll eat my hat.

You're right!
I've never heard of a band called Crowbar. So your hat survives to be eaten another day.

Whilst Coal Catfish is too simple, C. perugiae is more complicated than the answer.

The SA list is too long and there are way too many thrash bands in the latin, am I allowed to ask one question?

If I am...it would be "What sort of area might you be from?"
If I'm not, you'll have a very good idea what type of clues to avoid

vi) My river might be named after a Womble. Actually, it's probably the other way round.

He looks a bit like one of the members of Anthrax

That should be correct: Orinoco is a Womble.....

Anthrax, from the Greek word for coal.
Anthrax, the bacterial disease, apparently so named because of the black skin lesions it can cause.
Anthrax the band..
Orinoco the Womble.

Your turn!
:-)
M.

Edit: & as you say Anthracite is also from Anthrax & is a type of coal.
(Torbanite is also a type of coal.. clearly I have some sort of coal fixation )

You know how many times I looked at that fish and could not associate coal? I think I finally googled coal synonyms and settles on the sharp stone etymology bit  It was the womble that really helped. The distribution list doesn't say where most of the places listed are. I need to make my own cheat sheet someday and write down where all those places are.

Also didn't know that torbanite is coal too. You're a diamond in the rough then

Okay, back in a minute...
Previously Listed Catfish

New fish:
a) Don't mind what the Brazilian soccer player spotted.

I've found one that fits brilliantly:
In "my" team - PSV Eindhoven - there's a young player called Manco. And despite his age he's quite confident and doesn't mind the others "stars" in the team (Astroblepus = stargazer).
One minot thing though.......too bad he's Peruvian

Thank godness our country is made up of 90% people from elsewhere -we've got the genes from the superstar countries but not quite there yet and our native community still needs to get in there more

oh yeah, fish...

Nope,Only the soccer star you need to know plays for Brazil but the fish lives nearby.

It did. I've seen them live over here in December 1977, which was a remarkable concert.

Back to business.

1) My genus name is a combination of 2 currently valid other genus names, although you can't just stick them together to have me
2) My species name refers to something a black & white TV doesn't have
3) Despite your expectations, I'm NOT from S-Am

As for the new one.. unicolor or dichromum etc. would be nice.. but are from S. America..

New fish:
I'm somewhat recently discovered.
My long common name would be really easy if they had used my species name.
I'm a bi-color fish with lovely prominent barbels.
I would probably be a great seller for aquarium stores so hopefully someone will breed me soon.

Next:

1) I share my species name with another family member
2) My genus name lacks some fluid compared to the above mentioned family member
3) Our species name is also in use as a genus name for a non catfish; a clue - although spelled slightly different - may be found in a recent riddle fish.
