That's the one!

A giraffe is an "even-toed ungulate mammal" (I learned this morning )
Occidentalis (of) the West.

Your turn!

1) I was looking at Vermeer's work showing some cowboys and indians on horseback and noticed a significant difference.....

Half an hour?

Might take longer than that.. (unless someone else gets in first of course).. Monday night is "bath night" for the fish.

Hmm.. Vermeer.... sounds more like L-Num's department than mine...

Can't see any Vermeer connection though..

I'm still having heart palpitations from having read "Vermeer" and "cowboys and indians" in the same sentence...

There's a few paintings that might relate in a creative way, but I can't find the fish connection...

edit: here's a saddled painter: ?

Aha! (maybe)
Saddle Catfish
pictus = painted. -> Vermeer
Indians don't use saddles.

hey, we found that at the same time
Indians don't use saddles.
maybe that's the difference?

or P.pictus - painted but there's a difference between the two colour forms?

I quoted this for both fish and explanation are  , yet you may sort out between yourselves who has won :D
Anyway, to both, very good (again).

I think, comparing the times of the posts/edits that I sneaked it, but it was a photo finish.
Mrs Iron Madtom can always disqualify me if I'm wrong

And now for something completely different..

ii) I would like to buy.. a fish licence!

;-)

It's not an angler's licence, more a licence to keep fish.. if that sounds like it came from the Ministry of Silly Ideas, well that might be a clue..;-)

iii) My name refers to a military obstacle which goes by various names. To the French it is the Cheval de Frise, to the germans Spanischer Reiter.

iv) I'm from the biig family.

Ooo close .. however, hystrix (Porcupine) is not the animal you need.

v) Clue # ii gives you more than half my name..

vi) You'll know when you've found the right fish because the etymology section of its entry sets about explaining the name of a completely different genus from a completely different family.. (Once this is done I'll maybe file a "bug" report).

Yes, do so. Jools or MatsP can probably change them all at the same time; I have to do them one by one.

- Now for something completely different/ "I want to buy a fish licence" = Monty Python.
The name of the fish is .. "Eric"

- Ericius = Hedgehog. Also Cheval de Frise, an anti-cavalry/armour device & the hedgehog infantry formation.

Whilst googling around for hedgehogs, I found a 1500 year old riddle the answer to which is .. hedgehog.

Plena domus spinis, parvi sed corporis hospes;
incolumi dorso telis confixus acutis
sustinet armatas segetes habitator inermis.

"Symphosii Scholastici Aenigmata" (XXIX. Ericius)
and a translation of it here

Next! :-)

Iron Madtom here:
List is updated but may miss a few in the next while - Mr.Sluggo the computer is behaving like a commodore 64, searching for fish is out of the question as page flips are taking 1/2 cup coffee each.

Hold the fort, may take a few days...

You certainly didn't think I was able to pick that one out instantly, did you? I had to check them all - well almost

Btw: due to very long days at school (8.30 AM to 10.30 PM) today and tomorrow I'm unable to come up with a new riddle atm. I'm too tired to think of one right now. So either we wait or someone has to volunteer.

OK, here's a new riddle from me. I am going to collect three of these fish tomorrow, yet each and only one of them is a concatenation of the base 10 representations of the first three primes, and thus a Smarandache-Wellin number!
