Yep, it's midway between Narcissus Cory and Ozark madtom.... Should have counted instead of browsed

Argh. I did count, but my count brought up the letter 'I' and I couldn't find a match. Different names used.
Tried to find halfway between locations too but the cory has no location listed. Need to change tracks...

Even when I use the common names, the L082 still ended up halfway by that count. Weird coincidence

Oops, thought you meant Opal was the correct mineral not the correct catfish. Like having a second birthday.

Here's my fav:
I may be named after a camera.
I am immaculate in the OTHER sense of the word.
I am south asian.

Nope.
Leica? - wow that's good.

A very very old 'camera'
Silurus knows me well but nobody keeps me.
I'm most often the colour of dark chocolate.
I'm not an Iraqi big-city dweller but you might think so at a quick glance of my first name.

This is really hard!
To cryptic for me.

Despite all your clues and me putting a lot of time into this riddle (googled for cameras, Iraq cities, the lot), I must admit I have no idea at all.....
Have you got another easy clue??

Re: what am I?

I'm truly immaculate - spotless.
I'm usually brown but my photo looks black.
My first name is sort of like Bagdad, my genus name is like Bagdad too but fishy.
I have 115 species in my family.
The 'camera' was invented in maybe China 400BC, but was used by Aristotle and maybe even the Dutch Masters but this is still debatable.
Silurus described me.
No one has me.
I'm under 10 inches.
I'm from Thailand area.

Well thanks, It's been quite a challenge :D .

Here's another one:

I went twice to the barbershop for I don't want to look like a ZZ-Top musician. However, I'm a fish from the present.

No kidding! I've read more about catfish in the last few days than I have in weeks, and learned some Latin, Spanish, Dutch...and it's fun

Second clue:

My genus name is part of a song (title) by a UK band of which one member is a combination of a well known PC member and a part (county if you like) of where I live - and often mistakenly used for my whole country....

That is exactly why I set up this thread. :D
As a learning thread, I was hoping it would be clues which are more scientifically based, but I like the way it has evolved, people are obviously still learning through reading up on different cats, so the purpose is fullfilled.
One thing I like about the challenge is that I am looking at catfish from other areas apart from South America, an area which I know a geekishly vast amount about. It has highlighted for me how little I know about catfish from other countries.
The only danger with this thread is the more I investigate looking for the answer, the more catfish I want to keep. I am already considering an Asian set up, and a cold water........................ :!:
As for the current conundrum................my guess is it's a doradid.

Jools should really set up a Wanted Cat list so we can keep track of them all. I've found so many small ones I 'could' keep.
I was hoping it would be clues which are more scientifically based
I've googled so many scientific papers by happy accident that I found out I have Madtoms in my area

Clues - I'm still looking for something related to Helmond, think I'm off in left field here.

How on earth did you come up with Helmond??

I googled a tourist site on "Introducing the Eindhoven Region". I thought maybe Helmond sounded a bit like Holland so people may mistake the two words?

Like I said, I'm manning (or womaning) left field here but nice region...

Imo it deserves to become a sticky because of the above mentioned reasons!
To avoid confusion with the obvious questions in the "What's my catfish" forum however, the name of the thread could be changed to something like "The catfish riddles".

I think Holland is the word you need.
Btw: that is of course NOT where the fish is from.

Clue three: I could be a female dancer, if I weren't a fish

And especially for the founder of this thread a scientific clue:

One of my two synonyms contains the family name I am currently in
