i don't have to hype that; the fact that it looks like the gazillion other Hypans just with another paintjob is quite sufficient to get sold aplenty once it'll hit the stores

regrdless of how ugly it is or how pretty or if it eats only babies for breakfast s sole food; if it's a suckermouth armored catfish with a hefty price and a number-tag, it'll sell. period.
You're just plain wrong about that one - 100% dead wrong. This is a grey species with no pattern at all, with a great common name of zombie pleco. The fish didn't sell at the usual prices, and exports tailed off years before the bans.

My point is that, because it's not pretty, it's first in line for extinction. As I know of no breeders or even keepers.

Panaque maccus may well be a Skoda (actually, yes it probably is), but then the millions who drive them aren't all wrong. I test drove a Skoda and it was at no. 6 of 12 when I whittled down my new car choice list earlier the year down to 5. It just guzzled too much, otherwise it was good.

Anyway, I reckon P. maccus is cool. I like Neil's idea for a new species but I think I did say no plecos for a while!

I guess I'd better get busy with the cool wall eh? Oh, there's 140 bug reports, three book reviews, 67 emails and a catfish of the month to do first! :-)

The 140 bug reports are probably NOT going to take precedence over the Cool-wall, I predict. I'm not saying it's going to happen real soon, but I'm 100% sure it's going to happen before the current 140 [actually, there are 148 bug threads (+2 informational posts) as of 10 seconds ago] are resolved - and if the cool-wall isn't supposed to happen until all bugs are fixed, we have a LONG wait. Some of those bugs are a few years old already!

I know. :-) However I did finally answer an email from 2007 this week!

Definitely a candidate for "sub-zero", but Jools said no more plecs, or South Americans for a while...
Jools wrote:On the condition please that we do a couple of non plecos (and non South Americans) next?
I propose ...

I'd always wanted to keep these, ever since I saw a photo in Kobayagawa's The World of Catfishes. I finally found some after many years, and they were a pleasure to keep.

Timid, skittish, and fussy over water parameters, but definitely my favourite syno.

I don't think I've ever seen this one offered for sale, so I'm not familiar with it, but based purely on the CateLog entry, I'd say cool-
very pretty but not too overstated
small enough for medium-sized tanks
riverine syno rather than a Tang

looks like a fish I'd happily give tank space to

Cool! Nice pattern (by Mother Nature). Cute. Small. Adorable!
The car that goes with it is this:

Sweet little car, Marc. And I would agree with some of it but since I don't know the car, a newer version to compare for me would be the new BMW Z4, small, cute but with more oomph!
This fish has oomph!
Almost a perfect fish. If it was more available,I would call it sub zero.
Colour, size, habit, requirements (ph/temp), feeding, whiskers, all perfect.

I have never found one and the nasty hybridizers have made it so I probably have less chance in the future of finding one. Any fish that is totally unobtainable to the average person can't be sub-zero so is cool

Shame on Jools for posting barefoot, no clogs.

Nah, unobtainable = subzero.

I'd be surprised if we got any uncool votes for S. robertsi, but maybe they're just too cute to be sub-zero ...

I wonder what registered keeper number eight thinks

If we go back to the original Top Gear Cool Wall - the only car that is sub-zero is one of the Aston Martins & i'm pretty sure this is available to only a select few not the masses -

Robrtsi - is knocking on the door of sub-zero, not sure if it is in the freezer quite yet.

Hmm, maybe I spoketh too sooneth...
There's a few cats I'll never have that are subzero to me.
The aston martin has one problem that keeps it off my subzero wall- James Bond. Men love James Bond but not all women do, kinda says something right there..This is a fish that is not a "guy fish" or a "girly fish", another thing to point it to cool.

However, the subzero wall on motorworld.net has a Mclaren F1. Out of respect for that car, I agree that a subzero can be unobtainable or easy to find.
That squeaks S.robertsi much closer to subzero, but still cool. This time it stays only cool because everyone likes it. That's kind of bland in itself.

I'm sure we will have a cetopsid sooner or later and I'll then come up with the same car
It's a 1991 Nissan figaro btw, 20,000 built and originally only sold in Japan. They seem to be popular in the UK, but these are "all" imported as second hand cars.

cute lil Syno, but not subzero.

I can think of at least 20 species i like better.
it's got a nice pattern and it's small, but it doesn't rank up there with the ubercool cats

the fact that it's African counts ofcourse, because not being South American is a pre with any catfish ;)

Coolcat.

Any fish with the nerve to have a giraffe pattern is cool to me. I likes.
Do I like it more than S Flavitaeniatus or S Greshoffi though? Hmmmmm dunno bout that.

Thank you for using the smiley - so we know you're not serious

After all, personally I think a tank for non-american fishes is a tank wasted. But anyone is free to think differently

Tempted to say sub-zero, but would settle for cool.

I would really wish for Synodontis species to get popular like the L-numbers. They deserve just the same degree of fame as l-numbers. Maybe even more.

Not so. If you know what you are looking for, it's quite easy to find genuine fish in the shops - ok, maybe not EVERY shop, but some shops.

And there are Hybrids because people buy these fish.

to quote Jools on this:
"you're so wrong, a 100% wrong on this one"

maybe in the UK, yes, but not on the mainland

here it's quite hard to get true Syno's. only a few recommended highlevel cichlid specialists carry unpolluted Riftlake Tanganyikan Syno's.
all the rest; hybrid Walhalla with the exception of returned outgrown eupterus and the occasional nigrita/robbianus

if we want to get true Syno's we have to leave the country and even then we better know a fair bit about syno's, otherwise even German shops foist off the hybrids.

I've been to a fair number of Dutch shops the last few months and I know of ONE, yes 1!, that does NOT have hybrids and the majority these days ONLY have hybrids
they're cheaper.....

and ALL those are sold under genuine names. the only shop I ever encountered that was honest enough to label the Tzech rubbish as "Synodontis sp hybrid" was a German shop.

Sounds like a business opportunity for a decent fish store in the Netherlands Sid.

Head down to the bank and get that loan!
