hehe, taxonomy is fun, evolution is even better.
check this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomystidae
a few snippets:
a primitive family of catfishes (order Siluriformes). Diplomystes is particularly interesting as a basal group of catfishes.
Diplomystids retain more plesiomorphic characteristics than any other siluriforms, recent or fossil, including aspects of the maxillary bone, barbels, nares, otic capsule, anterior pterygoid bones, Weberian complex centra, caudal skeleton and fin rays, and pectoral girdle. Monophyly for Diplomystes is well supported by synapomorphies of the vomerine and palatine shapes, cranial articulation of the hyomandibula, and heavily papillose skin
Diplomystes species are the only extant catfish family with teeth on a well-developed maxilla (although this is also true of the extinct genus Hypsidoris)
unfortunately there's no part of the globve that vcannot be screwed up by man.....
All diplomystids are considered to be potentially or actually threatened or endangered due to habitat deterioration and predation or competition by introduced trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss and Salmo trutta. D. chilensis may be extinct

Next fish:
1) I have something to do with Shiva (amongst others), but also with Triumph
2) Of my original genus, only one valid member is still listed in FishBase
3) my species name has something to do with medieval mensural notation

interesting
Shiva is a Hindu god associated with destruction or transformation, but also with fire.
Triumph made a wee little fancy sportscar called "spitfire"....or are we talking about Triumph motorcycles or Triumph the hardrock band? (I don't think it's the latter)
the last one I had to look up. medieval music writ...never heard of it. it looks "spotty"; is it a hint for the pattern or colorayion found on the fish?

We're talking about Triumph motorcycles here. You're looking for a specific type.
Besides Shiva, also a Greek and Roman God are associated with it.
Clue 3 will reveal the species name. You may google for it.

phew!
tough call!
after trying to foist off tigers, daytona, bonneville and a host of other motorcycles on ancient gods, I remembered Shiva holding a trident.
and that is also the weapon of choice of both Neptune and Poseidon wich are Roman and Greek gods.
Tridens has 3 species and Tridensimilis 2; the first isn't even around in the catelog, the latter is, but both species are listed in catelog and fishbase.
the only Tri wich has a single species AND looks like it's written over with mediaval music is
if this isn't the fish, then I really am without a clue ;)

But are all 3 valid in FB?
The trident is right. Now find a fish that looks like it.
You've already mentioned the right genus. The musical clue will lead you to the species. Again, google for it.

Tridens melanops?
I overlooked the validity......
I guess it wasn't the looks of the mediaval music, but the first letters?
there are no pictures of this fish anywhere, so i can't check out if it has the same spots as Trichogenes.
melanops means black something, maybe with black spots.
how come this one isn't in the catelog?
there are plenty of non illustrated catfishes in there.
that's why i made the mistake of sticking to it like glue. ;)
I tend to avoid fishbase mostly because it is soooooo sssllloooooowww and often doesn't load at all.

Nope. It's a Clog fish.

ugh
checked Trichomycterus: about 10 genera in the catelog, and maybe 50 or so in fishbase; Tridensimilis has 2 in both catelog and fishbase, Tridens is not the fish, Trichogenes is not the fish...
I'm out
anyone else fancy a go?

You've now mentioned the genus you're looking for twice.....

Sidguppy does the work, I steal the glory...

hehe
In medieval mensural notation, the brevis was one of the shortest note lengths ,
therefore:
?
And if that's the fish, we might need to see a nice picture of one....Marc?
edit: hmm, after seeing sidguppy's post in 'what is my catfish', my potential win seems rather unexciting. Nice little fish tour

I don't get this
your hint was that the fish had only 1 genus listed in fishbase, but it has not
2) Of my original genus, only one valid member is still listed in FishBase
2 valid members are listed in both fishbase and the catelog.....
if the hints are busted, not much use in following them.

There's nothing wrong with the hints.

T. brevis was originally described as Tridens. So when you had Tridens, you had to look for a fish that looks like it (similis). No problem here afaic.

Marc:

Oops, sorry Marc, you're listed as a keeper of this fish so I thought you may some pics to show it off. Maybe a glitch or I was very sleepy when I looked it up last night.
New Fish, easy one if you've seen this fish in the Cat-eLog.
Clue 1) If I was made of plastic, I would be a shoe horn, though I don't know the word for that in Kamayurá.

Chasmocranus longior
Nope but right continent. Wrong family. My fish is larger, maybe a shoe horn for an NBA player.
Clue 1) If I was made of plastic, I would be a shoe horn, though I don't know the word for that in
Kamayurá.
Clue 2) If I were steel, I could be used as a prybar.

Clue 3) I'm from a place that might hold the 2014 FIFA world cup.
Clue 4) My common name would make you think of another fish, but not a pretty one like me.

I've used the clue of the people, hence Brazil or better: Xingu. BUt if it's a pretty one it's most likely going to be an L-number.....

Oh dear, I've thrown you a curve ball...
I've used the clue of the people, hence Brazil or better: Xingu
The language is one of an Amazon people so Brazil works, or more a specific place, Clue 3.
BUt if it's a pretty one it's most likely going to be an L-number.....
I happen to think Brachyplatystoma tigrinum is one of the prettiest
Think of a prybar and a shoe horn, they have something in common, just like this fish. Maybe I should have mentioned downhill skis.
Kind of like how a hammerhead shark looks like a hammer.

It's the perfect fit!
What a nose on that little darling

Looks like it gets smaller as it gets older but I can't really tell.
Clue round-up:
Clue 1) If I was made of plastic, I would be a shoe horn, though I don't know the word for that in Kamayurá.
Upturned 'nose' like a shoe horn, from the Amazon where that language is used.
Clue 2) If I were steel, I could be used as a prybar.
Nose again
Clue 3) I'm from a place that might hold the 2014 FIFA world cup.
Rio Branco, Brazil, still in contention to host the cup.
Clue 4) My common name would make you think of another fish, but not a pretty one like me.
Sturgeon catfish
Next fish is yours, Marc
ps. your guess Spatuloricaria sp`rio_xingu` definitely fit the word 'pretty'!

Are you pulling my leg? I hope so since many times someone has squeaked in with the answer at the last minute. No one here has cheated or isn't playing fair. It's a game so please refrain from making personal judgements. THAT'S not fair.

New fish:
1) the first letter of my genus name indicates that I'm missing something
2) the rest of my genus name refers to the above mentioned something
3) I share my species name with an auchenipterid

I think you got it Torbanite!
The Auchenipteridae would be Ageneiosus inermis.
I never would have gotten that without having a split screen to start comparing species names
