Last time I travelled over to the Netherlands (to watch the World Superbikes at Assen) it wasn't very far from England, really. You're welcome over here (for a bit! ;) ), Alex.

Did you ever hear about plate tectonic, Matts? About the moving continents?

No, seriously, I'm afraid almost noone in NL would care whether their Synodontus are a genuine species or not. In fact, almost everyone would be amazed by the very question.

We are the center of the flower trade, a trade where everything is mixed, we do a lot in agriculture (those catfish hybrids raised for the table could very well be a Dutch idea) and so on

No, I think there are easier ways to go bankrupt

Could we get back to talking about the species in question???????

OK ... S. robertsi... It's undeniable a pretty, cute little character but does it make me 'WANT ONE!'? No I'm afraid it doesn't. I'd happily own one but I don't want to rush out and spend my hard-earned. So, uncool I think.

I think, for Syno fans, this is a top 5 species, no?

Hmmmm, errrrr, well, oh, errrr not in my top 5 of available synos, nor in my top 5 of wish-list not a chance synos.

Certainly top ten, but not quite challenging for a podium position

I know what Jools things, and whilst I've never kept them, I agree: Sub-zero.

Too easy, I'm waiting for BN fights..

= subzero.
Most beautiful and graceful and catfishy. Only competition for coolest cat is . However, B. macracanthus could fit in a normal sized tank and that gives it a slight advantage.

Verging on cool but not extremely cool for me- most definitely not subzero. Nice that it's distinctive (if a little odd-looking- certainly wouldn't win any beauty contests), and non-predatory compared with others cats its size, but a bit on the timid side for a mid-sized cat. It looks a bit too much like a pickup truck with that adipose fin that goes on for ever, and a dorsal fin reminiscent of a CB aerial.

it's weird and it's very very rare in the trade and I like the black color

BUT

it's an uncool fish!

why?
because it looks like it's been put together by Igor after the man had done some serious binge drinkin'

the head looks like it should be in a Corydoras sized catfish.
the adipose looks like it came from an Auchenoglanis sized catfish....

the whole shape lacks proportions; it really looks like it's made up of leftover parts from other catfish

nope, not cool.

and for those who think I'm prejudiced because it's not an African catfish; well IMNSHO there IS a black Asian catfish that does have proper proportions:

A true subzero Asian cat!

Black Lancer - Cool (very cool) but not sub-zero, due to aggressive nature when keeping a group containing more than a single male.

Sidguppy has a point...

As much as I really like this fish (I have one and she's stunning), I just wish the whiskers were more like a pim's; long and whippy. Then it would be super duper cool. But they're not, so it isn't.

But this is a cool cat.

Indeed, out of proportion and made of several bits and pieces.
Yet, that didn't stop the Turkish people from building this:
oto.jpg
The Otosan 500 Pikap is also out of proportion and made of bits and pieces.
Therefore - and for being a fan of oddballs - both Otosan and Bagrichthys macracanthus are cool.

Marc, you're telling me that car rolled out of the factory looking like that?

it looks like someone bought an old Peugeot, got out the acetylene welding gear and made his own pickup truck.
wow
that is one ugly car......

Actually, the (male) lancer isn't aggressive if you give it enough space. About 1 sq m space, but that "all". It's also the least aggressive of the group. I think it's pretty much sub zero as it doesn't look like anything else as well as what I've said before.

Next catfish. No need to discuss this one further :D

As the main man at PC Jools obviously counts as the Clarkson figure. Unlike Top Gear though Jools respects what Shane has to input unlike the derision suffered by the May & Hammond sidekicks...

Also, Shane is taller and a little louder. It's just not a good fit is it! I guess the analogy only goes so far.

Middle of the road for me- I know Richard, Sid etc. love them but for me they're at the lower end of "desirable" in the mochokids- quite pretty (but no more so than other Tang synos), reach a decent but not unmanageable size, but just too quarrelsome, with a ridiculous price tag- I just don't understand the hype of this fish. OK, I get that "rare or hard to catch" equals expensive, but I don't understand why so many people want it- if it was common as muck it would be regarded as less desirable than other similar, smaller, more placid species.

If it was a car it would be a Subaru Impreza or similar- OK-looking but overpriced and unreliable.

Being a cichlidkeeper, I think i can stand some agression in my fish. However, having had Sids Synodontis over to stay for a while last summer (S granulosa and S mulitpunctatus) I was, really sick with their agression

My cichlids are big and tough, while the synodontus were just plain mean

I don't think I'll ever keep Synodontus again - even if I would keep non-American fishes, I still would refrain from them

Just like you can't lump all genera/species of cichlids into the same behaviour, you shouldn't judge Synos by the way S. granulosus are...

Soz, I'll have to sit on the fence with this one :an: . I've never kept lake fish.
Its a smart looking fish though, with contrasting sporty aerofoils, errrm I mean finnage.

Bas, the other ones were Synodontis njassae.......and those are very docile.
tame,. yes, but docile as Syno's go.

The Granny is ofcourse subzero in the same vein that the Bugatti Veyron is subzero.

we're not just talking epic purple stuff here, but frankly, when the Clog tags of the granny turn up, the text should be in orange.
really
:beardy:
Synodontis granulosus

NOW we're talking

About Jools or Shane being Jezza, that's a no-brainer
Shane = Clarkson; Jools = Hammond The Hamster.
the only question is who will fill the shoes of Captain Slow?

I wanted to see what a few others put in first, but c'mon everyone surely you can all see this is sub-zero!!! Surely no explanations are required, i mean , just look at it!!!

The Veyron is a good comparison or the Ferrari FXX as modern cars go but i'm tempted to say more like a DB5 or Dino.....mmmm yeah :P

btw I found Captain Slow.....

HH!

maybe not look-a-like-wise, but definitely the same vein of wise person wich balances out with the Hamster's and Jezza's antics

HH would make a perfect May for this The Three Amigos/Top Gear/Planet Catfish thing we're running here

to put all three gentlemen in The Three Musketeers would be bit of a challenge though.
who's gonna be Porthos, Athos or Aramis? :foggie: :an:

I have a feeling this would all make more sense to me if I knew what this TV show was about and who these people are. I looked at the website and it seems to be about sports cars. Jools likes fast cars. If it can't hold 4-6 people plus collecting gear; cross rivers, climb mountains, and double as a sleeping quarters in a storm it is a toy.

-Shane

This is the only type of car that interests me.
