Hi Marc,
I gave mine 24 hours to settle before I tried to feed them. I did not have a free quarantine tank so I put them in a tank of mixed corys. The tank is lit well enough by the room light and is also near the window, but it does not have its own light... the video I posted had no additional lighting.
Their favourite resting place is under a piece of bogwood that leans against the front glass... so they are always visible.
I think the first food I offered was finely chopped earthworm. They also get a shrimp paste that I make, but they will eat finely chopped raw shrimp as well. Now, they eat dried foods too.
If you can present the food right in front of them, this helps get them started... same with any catfish. Try using a wooden skewer or maybe long tweezers that planted-tank people use.

I can see why you don't know where they are! It's a beautiful show tank.
I would be fascinated to see your tank in action... at feeding time! You have quite a mix of woodcats.
Do your other cats feed with the lights on?
It might be worth adding several small pieces of bogwood along the front, leaning on the front glass, with just enough gap beneath them for woodcats. Then you can observe and target feed them, ensuring they get their fill and 'training' them to feed.
Once they are all 'trained', you could gradually remove the small bogwood pieces, if you want to.
What size are your new otorongos?

This pic shows the bogwood 'den' at the front of the tank. It's home to the otorongos and also another recent addition... 4 x Tatia 'yellow-tail tiger' which I'm really pleased with. They are about as close to T. Galaxias as I have seen. There's a tank full at Pier... easily overlooked!

I'll get back to your remarks asap; just wanted to say those Tatia would definitely be galaxias in my book. Very nicely patterned and people who've been after "galaxias" (Martin?) pls take the opportunity and grab some while they're still around. Great find.

Btw: as I'm unable to seen a tail, I take it they're yellow(-ish); as the "tiger" makes little sense wrt the pattern, could it be a reference to the Rio Tigre (Peru)?

I don't think they are galaxias. The locality isn't right as well as the pattern. I think they are Tatia sp B.

Can I say wow! 100 pages! I love Auchenipterids!

Perhaps I didn't express myself well enough. Whether it is galaxias or not, I wouldn't care. This is imo as close to galaxias as I have ever seen and certainly not "your average intermedia".
Too bad the spots wear off, as can be seen in Steve's pictures.

@ Steve: is your system of labelling fishes with letters "officially" accepted? I've also seen it used in the Iwokrama fish list, where Tatia B & C are mentioned. Are these 2 the same species as your sp. B & C?
The reason I ask this, is because people may get confused as there are none such species in the Clog, in which case your link is their only reference.

@ Otorongos: I saw 2 specimens last night and they seemed okay (no sunken bellies, damages or such). They sit much higher than I had expected; I was searching the bottom area, but found them halfway and upwards. That gave me good hope for the other 2 and made me happy

Those Tatia look really close to Tatia galaxias I tend to agree, seems they have those white spots on the caudal as well

Spots look smaller than on Tatia sp B don't you think Steve??

Hi Marc, no you expressed yourself well, I read your original post that way, I was just saying what I thought about the fish. They certainly are very nice regardless of what they are.

I've not seen it anywhere else to be honest. Is Iwokrama a wholesaler?

I've seen the tankful of these fish and the spot sizes vary. Also, the juvenile in my photo is very small. As they get bigger the spots get smaller until they almost fade out. I will take some pics of them if i can and compare the cranial morphology etc, then we should know for sure. The locality details is putting me off too.

This is my favourite thread on pc and has got me very interested in putting a group of woodcats in a new 4 footer I'm setting up this week. Those Tatia look very tempting from pier so thanks for all the info on Auchenipterids. Great stuff!

Your welcome Marc, I intend to read more of the earlier posts before deciding which way to go species wise..those otorongo looked very nice at pier but I'm guessing there will be very few left judging by earlier posts!

Spinipterus sp. (1) = Otorongo

Alex was here two days ago. After an afternoon of semi hard labour in the garden (he needed some plants for the garden of his new home) we took some time in the evening to watch the fishes.
He was quite surprised by the visibility of Ageneiosus cf atronasus, Trachydoras and especially Trachelyopterichthys (of which we also saw a mating).
I couldn't show him the otorongos, though.....

LightOne... I don't recommend you put your hand in the tank... they might mistake you for food and drag you in. That's if your fish ever show themselves ever.

I just like posting pics and vids, showing their behaviour.

No, they belong to a friend of mine

After quite a stay in my large tank, the are going to their new tank tomorrow. Arjan Kruseman is going to provide them a good home.
While catching them, I can do a head count and see how many otorongo's I still have in that tank. To that amount 3 more will be added which I received today and are currently in the small tank.
I'm also expecting some from Alex, who's going to stop keeping S-Am catfishes as he's fed up with the water problems he constantly faces.

As an aside, I had to move some wood around the other evening when catching the pair of , and only saw 6 of the 8 Otorongos - am hoping the other two were hiding somewhere else - have not seen any remains, and there is nowhere for them to get trapped, so fingers crossed I still have all 8. Worse case, the 6 I saw are all fat and healthy which is a good sign.

I got them today.

Me and my family were somehow overwhelmed by the sheer size of these driftwoodcatfish when removing the lid of the bucket this afternoon.
My 5 year-old daughter called them "Hippofish". The mouth is pretty wide indeed.
It's by far the largest catfish I've ever kept.
A wonderfull species imo
