OK, here's an easy one, what's the easiest catfish to start an argument about?

Easy indeed. And quite incredible that people argue about such an ugly fish.

See..... nearly started another argument

New fish somewhere today

New fish:

1) I'm the opposite of a star gazer
2) Wrt dentation I'm like a newly born
3) In older books I have a family for myself; nowadays I'm tugged away in a larger family
4) I could have been an auchenipterid wrt looks

Careful, we nearly disappeared from page 1.... That would have been the first time since this thread started in February.
Or is this the end for the guessing game?

Maybe you've just got everyone stumped. :-)
You've certainly got me stumped (although that's not difficult to do where catfish are concerned!).

The only vaguely plausible answer I can think of is ?
Doesn't look much like an auchenipterid to me though..

Both answers above are not correct, but thanks for trying.

Some more clues:

5) I was described by 2 persons. One of those is my species name in my single synonym
6) My barbels are quite prominent

We made it to page 100 so there's no stopping now :) I've been up to my belly in work/family illness stuff so I haven't taken a shot at this one yet. Maybe I'll take a quick peek while I've got a moment....my mental puttering may trigger someone else to find the fishie...

1) I'm the opposite of a star gazer
um..geology?
2) Wrt dentation I'm like a newly born
single tooth, what's the latin for that torbanite?
3) In older books I have a family for myself; nowadays I'm tugged away in a larger family
? will advance search the words 'has been moved'
4) I could have been an auchenipterid wrt looks
?
5) I was described by 2 persons. One of those is my species name in my single synonym
synonym page here I come..
6) My barbels are quite prominent
mystus- or -mystus?
hmm

1) What direction does a star gazer look at?
2) How many teeth has a newly born?
3) Difficult indeed; sorry for that
4) Definitely a fish I do like a lot (but no go due to feeding difficulties)
5) Not the easiest clue (see 3)
6) No mystus; more like a moustache

7) I have no keepers

2) How many teeth has a newly born?
doh!, I must be tired

downward looking USD moustached catfish, doesn't fit the other clues - either does my second, anodonti, will have to check again later when I get home. Hard clues are good, makes one work a bit

Downward looking is okay.
Wrong continent.
Those barbels look pretty good as well btw.

Hi MatsP,
I kind of 'mugged' Marc's clues so here there are in the proper form.

Marc's fish:

1) I'm the opposite of a star gazer
2) Wrt dentation I'm like a newly born
3) In older books I have a family for myself; nowadays I'm tugged away in a larger family
4) I could have been an auchenipterid wrt looks
5) I was described by 2 persons. One of those is my species name in my single synonym
6) My barbels are quite prominent
7) I have no keepers

So far we only have that is the wrong continent, etc.

100 pages and the first time I have tried this game.

No teeth, downward looking, old family and auchenipterid looks all point to Cranoglanis. I would also assume that this family has no keepers. Of course the no teeth part is hard as it could point to anything from an ictalurid to a silurid (and both families are absent from Africa).

Fair enough: the no teeth part = my species name.
That should give it away......

And one for the road:

9) A well known species has the same name as me, but in his case it's his species name and in my case it's my genus name.....

I'll have to work on that, wait'll you see the clues torbanite offers for the next fish, a pretty good challenge usually....

Bet you didn't expect that when you started it ;-)

Ok..

i) To continue the "eyes low down" / plankton feeder theme.. there is a species of Silver Carp whose specific name is an anagram of my specific name.
ii) A defining property of my family is the lack of an organ which most fish have.
iii) I'm quite small, but then we all are in my genus.

Who am I?

The most difficult part of this anagram was that I have been doubting for some time whether or not this was an anagram at all
I have to think about a riddle; hopefully new fish somewhere this evening
