Astroblepus = sky+ Looker, stargazer, one who uses gigantic mirror telescopes.
sabalo = One letter off sabata/sabato (shoe) or Ernesto Sabato. Don't really know why it was named sabalo? Someone famous I should know about?

I'm little with a relatively big tail.
7 people keep me, one of whom has a surname that almost makes that person an extremely expensive footballer.
My name is only a 'tiny bit' away from a fish that's already been & gone...

Hi Tana,
Just minor, but isn't the Spanish word for "shoe" zapato?
I got not hits wrt sabata, yet sabato is Italian for Saturday (Sabbath).

I think the Catalan for shoes is sabates. A shoe is una sabata. (I think).

:) A little knowledge is never minor.
I only know sabata as one and sabato as many shoes. What do people speak in Guatamala, Spanish as well? Maybe it was slang or a dialect? That's were I got it from but yes google does have a different one. I also know that my clogs were sabots in France. Slippers in Northern Italian are also called savatis. Shoe is scarpa - a single shoe, scarpe for a pair of shoes. Saturday in our dialect (Friulano)is Sabo.
:?:
I'll use the google version in future so we're all looking at the same book. Never thought to look it up!
Just did and here's an interesting one that references Inca and a shoe market in spain???
The Art of Shoemaking « Mallorca Daily Photo Blog
10 Jun 2009 ... like every year in June, Lloseta at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains not far from Inca celebrated a Fira de Sa Sabata (shoe market). ...

I've just added to the confusion...

i) I'm the species most (and least) likely to say: "There can be only one!"

Who am I?

Highlander..... not my cup of tea I'm afraid.

ii) I was described in the same year the film was released.
iii) My species sounds like the surname of an actor.
iv) Someone with the same name as the person I'm actually named after played for FC Eindhoven in the early 1950s. (It might be the very person, I don't know).

Although I have tried not to reply - as no-one else seems to do anymore - the Eindhoven clue kept nagging. Problem is that Eindhoven has two teams and the FC is not my favourite; that's PSV.
The only thing I can come up with is the above, but I know it's wrong for the fish is not described in 1986.
Other early 50's names of FC players are Louwers, van Melis, van Tuyl and Tebak.... It beats me.

On a side note: seeing that this riddle has been untouched since Jan 12, is it now time to end the thread?
Tana, what do you reckon?

I wouldn't formally end it, just leave it there. You never know when someone else might pick it up.

I'd almost forgotten about this..

Not the correct answer :-(
I'm fairly sure there was no actor called Schmidt in the film Highlander.

v) The player I was thinking of in clue iv) is in the list Marc quoted. (The first name of the player, the surname of the actor and the species name of the fish are the same).
vi) The fish is a small South American with black spots on its body and a black splodge on its dorsal fin.
vii) Three registered keepers.

A Lambert van Tuijl played for FC Eindhoven in the 50s.
Corydoras are sociable wee fish so unlikely to say "There can be only one!"

I was keeping an eye on it and kept promising myself to start searching, then Richard in zebra pants ruined my concentration  ...

I agree with Jools, I think it can just appear and reappear as people get time. I'll keep the update going and we'll just go with the flow.

However, if someone wants to tweak it into new life in cool way or a different direction, no problem :D

If we're waiting for someone to go with a new species. Then here's a Bagginsian one:

What is next months CotM?

OK, here's a little guidance. Firstly, Richard B isn't allowed to respond as he wrote it and, secondly, is a conceited fish not something that belongs to a family that initially sounds a bit like the coffee I am drinking.

Why would Richard write about that species, wrong continent!

"Pseudonem" sounds a bit like a pseudonym, which, stretching it a bit, could be conceited. It's a fish Richard's got in his "My Cats" page, and the clue didn't specify a continent as far as I can see.

That is stretching it a bit, you are right to focus your mind on the meaning of conceited though.
