They are 14,16,17,20 and 21cm total length. They get around 30cm tl or 25cm sl.

They will grow to 247mm SL according to the Cat-eLog. If you prefer imperial measures, that's just shy of 10". Haavards fish are currently in the 15-20cm/6-8" range - I think that's TL, so that would make them a little more than half-grown. Of course, the largest scientifically described fish may not be "the world record size" one - so they may grow bigger than that, but probably not by a huge amount. Time will tell.

Edit: too slow... :)

Time for a revisit :)
This weekwnd the two biggest L. triactis have been fighting some. The wounds are not too bad, but I pulled them out to measure them and make some new photos of the fish.
Both fish have grown a little. The biggest one measures 17cm sl and 22cm tl. The smaller measures 16c, sl and 21cm tl.

Anyway... I still want to find out if I have two males. If that is the case I will sell one of them and purchase a few younger ones. I bet the chances of getting a female is better when purchasing several sub-adults.

After studying their behaviour and shapes I strongly suspect they are both males.

Hi!

Thats two males.

From my experience, the male tends to be a bit lighter in the color than the female that often is a bit more dark brown.
Often you also can se the black spots clearer on the males body than of the famle. And as Janne says... fins, head and the odontodes on the snout. But I haven't had so many of this species as you, but when looking in fishshops, I always think that the males are brighter in color.

Often, when a males starts to guard a cave and watching for a female and breed, it's seemes that the head even grows a bit more.
A often could se much more distinct differences between male and females after they bred some times...

I will buy a pair soon when I get more space... keep in mind their agression against the females!

Very nice fishes! :!:

Thank you Cristoffer:)
I will sell the smallest of the two and get some sub-adults with as dull coloring as possible.

Bringing this thread back :)

Haavard, you have very similar taste in fish as I do. I just wish my tanks looked a nice as yours do!

I am having a group of XL L091's shipped to me on Saturday (expecting 9"+). He is not sure if he can sex them so don't know how many to order, they are quite pricey at this size. Any tips I can give him on sexing them easily?

Wondering how your attempts are going with the ones you have? How is the aggression now?

Rich

At that size sexing should be easy. The males have a larger head with odontodes around the snout. The females have almost no odontodes on the snout.

Please post pictures of them when they arrive. It would be very interesting to see closeups of the snout of a mature female. I would only order a trio.

I gave away all of mine to a friend a week ago. They were most probably all males. Aggression between the males did not seem to be a problem for my fish. There were fights, but not to the point of heavy damage. It is the females you need to protect against male aggression.

Ahh. Thanks for the info!

I am pretty sure I am going to order 5 of them. He's got what he believes to be 2 males and 3 females. Just not too sure how they will act with my 4 large L330's in a 300cm tank.

I don`t think the Panaques will bother the L. triactis much. Just keep a close watch over the females.

The fish on the picture below was killed by an aggressive male. It may have been a female.
