The problem with Crystals in a nano is that they don't like high temps and a nano tank heats up pretty quick to room temperature of higher in the summer, you would need a fan to keep the temps around 24ÂșC.
I did have some Crystals but an attack of planaria wiped them out

hmm good point. probably a good idea to have a larger tank in that case. aren't shrimp very sensitive to water parameters?

Hi Londondragon,
You might have a convert here... I'm really impressed with your tank.
So can you tell us the water conditions? Surely its not London tap?
What's the ph and hardness? What water changes do you do?
Lighting - are you using the lighting that came with the jewel tank?
Filter - jewel filter aswell? Don't the shrimp get sucked in?
I have a jewel 190 corner tank waiting to be shrimperized!
Thanks, in advance.

Larger is better off course, like I said your 72l would be ideal ;)

I use London tap water straight into the tank

no conditioner either.
I am not using the Juwel filter, I am using two internal smaller filters to prevent the shrimp being sucked into the powerhead.
I also added an extra 15w tube to the existing Juwel light.

that surprises me... i thought these shrimp liked soft water. And I wonder why the chlorine in the tap water hasn't wiped out your stock and killed the bacteria in your filters. What size water changes and how frequent?

I perform 50-60% water changes once every couple of weeks. I have been doing this for years in all my tanks without any major issues. A shrimp friendly substrate like ADA Amazonia or Oliver Knott Naturesoil does help with the shrimp.

London
with your expertise you should start breeding grade S CBS and CRS. have you ever given it a go? they're a little expensive, but if you have a good setup, should be ok, and with your experience should be "easy"?

I have been trying for 18 months, and had about 40 grade S shrimplets, then had a problem with the tank and lost them all. So not sure if I will try them again, spent a lot of cash on them. I am thinking about trying other shrimp species, got some delivered two weeks ago but most arrived dead

Today took delivery of white pearls/snowballs which all arrived well from Germany

hey
damn. not nice.
if you had 40 shrimplets you certainly know how to get them breeding, do you need anything special for them to start breeding...? i think you could easily sell grade S shrimp back to your LFS? can you recommend any sources on the basics of shrimp keeping?
thanks!
