I'd say they are one species.
And based on looks - which I know is not a solid argument - I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up not being Trachelyopterus once described.

Wrt the A. nigripinnis: still improving. Very visible and hungry. Less skittish, yet the sense of direction could be better (sore noses). All 6 can be seen in both pictures.
@Alex: Eheim has remained dry, even with diffusor. I didn't remove it yet for everyone was already asleep....

What I see in the most pictures is that almost all Auchenipterids are less ground-dwelling then my T. galeatus.

You're right, T. galeatus hardly leaves the bottom ime. Same goes for T. spec.3, while T. fisheri and T. lucenai are nearly always found in the middle and surface regions.

They may not bust the tank, yet they keep on busting their noses. I hope they will not look like a Pangasianodon (yes, that's what they are called these days ) in that respect.......

Another two weeks have passed and I'm now pretty sure they are healthy and growing. They'll be getting a larger tank shortly, yet I've given up hope that they'll ever stop bruising their noses......

Nice fishes Marc! Mine are currently in 300l tank. I added two circulation pumps (1000l/h each), removed some plants and roots and now my fishes look a bit better. They don't bang their head on the glass anymore except on feedingtime. If i throw some bloodworms in the tank it looks like there's 25 nirgripinnis instead of 10.

My group of are showing some breeding activity. Males doubled their dorsal fin in size and they are chasing the females every night and sometimes even during the day. Pics coming tomorrow.

I tried to breed pair of Crenuchus spilurus that live in the same tank, by using ketapang leaves and doing 10-20% water changes every day. Seems like it works for some Ageneiosus too. If they breed, i'll be one very happy fishkeeper.

Have you any idea where they came from and under which (native) name they were imported?

came from Imazo as A. cf piperatus, and i think they still have these.

came from Peruvian wholesaler as Bocon boca de pato. I got one with these. I still have two and i think i have two females.

Spec. 2 was nice indeed, but it passed.

My friend has a fish store and I'm gonna try to get more of the spec.3 + other auchenipterids in few months straight from Peru. I can send the list of species for you, so you can see if there's anything interesting. The wholesaler will send photos if asked.

If you're able to recognize the Peruvian name for A. cf. atronasus on that list, pls point it out for me. In that case I might be able to order some from here. I doubt that their listed name (from the exporter) was A. piperatus, but that they figured that out in Sweden. "Normal" Peruvian auchenipterid names normally start with Novia or Bocon; sofar I was not able to find an Ageneiosus on a Peruvian exporter's list.

An exporter named Peru Aquarium used to have a picture gallery too, but this firm has disappeared since a year or so.....

I was just joking. I dont think anyone else has these in Finland. Atleast i haven't heard anyone else keeps these, or any other Ageneiosus species. I asked LFS if they could order few "piperatus" for me after i saw them on the list, and about a week later i saw a small group of these in another store and they have been there since. Few of them jumped out of the tank (so i heard) an there's only two left.

Yep i tought if you would chek the list/photos and then we could figure out the names/species, and maybe then i might order some.

I'll try to get the exporters name for A. cf. atronasus. I would like to have atleast 5 more. They have become one of my favourite catfish.

Which store is this? My LFS very seldom (let's say almost never) have auchenipterids and particulary never the ones I'd like (Ageneiosus species) in their lists.

Its Tampereen akvaariokala. Ask there. Its a good place to get "oddballs".

I've been wondering - what kind of blue light is being used by members for night-time viewing?
Actinic? Or just a simple blue light bulb? LED perhaps?

I tried a 15W actinic light on a 4ft x 18" tank and it's too bright - the plecos don't come out...

In the past I've just used marine actinic tubes. Just an 18" on a 36" tank.

I use blue leds (one device with 10 leds) which are connected to a dipswitch. Very rewarding. See loads of catfishes and newly introduced fishes (characins in my case) won't end up as meals.
When I had a marine (blue) TL, my fishes tried to jump through the glass tank covers, so that experiment lasted about 10 minutes......they were absolutely terrified

I previously thought that fish could not see blue light. But it seems at least they can see very bright blue light.
LEDs on a dimmer are probably the way to go.

Hoping to have them in their permanent tank sometime next week. No doubt they will sulk again from being moved, but soon after... you'll wish you had some Instead of those pancakes with fins that you like
Re - the red cellophane... first I'm going to try a blue sleeve for a flourescent, I'm waiting for delivery.

Another bunch of eggs, but this time they're floating(?). I take they are eggs - for that's the most likely species to produce such a clutch - yet they may also be eggs.
I've never seen intermedia eggs float and I've never seen taeniatus eggs at all....

Good question......
I could have a look shortly (there's a holiday coming up in one week).
Thing is, when has a species been bred? I have had several nests/eggs of different species, yet I was never able to raise the juvies for the simple fact that they remain in the tanks and get eaten.

In my opinion "Bred" means getting at least one fry into something beyond fry - juvenile or whatever you want to call it. Getting eggs and no fry surviving (whatever the cause) doesn't count, and likewise for having fry, but they die before they have grown to reasonable size.

Raising them to "mature" size may be difficult for some of the large/slow-growing fish. Perhaps the rule should be "offspring alive a year after eggs laid" or something.

I'm sure the CSG "breeders award program" has a definition.
