Aight, so heres the beef. I helped my girlfriend set up a 10gal. tank before I left to go back to Nebraska for a few months, she lives in Washington. Anyway, it just finished cycling....well pretty much...but thats not important. Anyway, she went and got some fishies....and one of them that she happened to get was a very small catfish. The LFS employee called it a stone cat. Personally I've never heard of a stone cat, and the ones i have heard of are black with white spots. This doesn't have any. Confused am i. I think its some sort or Raphael or Banjo cat...just a really young one. Her photography skills aren't up to par yet, so yeah, please try to work with it, best i've got at the moment. Thankz! PF

btw they stay small too, about 1" is a big un.....

first time I encountered them years ago, they put me on the wrong track too; I assumed it was some kind of weird dwarf Banjo cat!
esp since the shopowner insisted it was South American....

It stays 1"? I didn't see any info on the link, so it must not be very common, but I love the little guys. Does anybody know about their habitat, demeanor, etc? Has anybody here bred them?

During our last trip to India, we encountered this species in a slow-flowing stream with a substrate of very fine sand. The fish were caught hiding among submerged vegetation.

yep i bred these last year
the fry are very tiny and very hard to raise out of about 50
hatchlings i raised to 3 month old a total of 9..
mainly i believe due to slight swings in water temperature ... i am sure i have a photo of a newly hatched fry somewhere, as soon as i can find it i will post it here..
(had trouble with a total system failure,, so i am only just getting up to full speed so to say; and a lot of files are still on disc).
they tend to do alright in a small tanks , with small companions like.. pigmy rasbora's or chela dadyburjori.. but no bigger than these, they dont like be roughed up..
and give them plenty of hiding places, i have found over the years these little catfish do better in a species only tank.

Hey! I just got one of those a couple weeks ago and was wondering how I was going to photograph him and put him up here to see what he was.
Sadly, mine did not make it, but there are some more at the store. They are so tiny!

Shweet action guys!! Thankz!! Just my initial guess, never actually saw the fish so i had no idea. Umm....when i was helping her set up the tank i gave her playsand....just last year i switched all my tankz to sand and i absolutely love it...great stuff. So yeah....it burys itself a lot. I recently bought 4 Stone Catfish at the pet store. I thought it was a bogus name, so I went looking on the internet for positive ID. I first went to FishGeeks.com and posted some pictures there on my unknown catfish. What do you know...some people thought it was a banjo cat...some said it didn't exactly look like a banjo cat. Several people said go to Planet Catfish. So I did that and started looking in the index but stopped because I didn't have time last night to search the entire index. So today I searched on yahoo for stone catfish, and this forum came right up. That's just too funny how easy this was. So I will post two pictures if I can figure out how to post a picture. Do I have to donate or something to be able to post pics. I just found a link which seems useful.....

I am pretty sure that I have one of those two species. It says they are commonly called "Moth Cats". Mine are around 1 inch long and they seem to hide very well in vegetation siting motionless.I bought 4 and wanted more and went back to the petstore and the gravel in the tank showed no more stone cats. I looked and looked and then I looked through the end of the tank and there was 1 more stone cat left sitting up on the suction cup of the heater.So now I have 5 stone cats in a 10 gallon tank with neons, sparkling gouramis,hifin pleco and some corydoras.So thanks for the help in identifying my catfish. This website is great.
