columbian vs peruvian pictus : how to tell them apart?

The cat-elog (and other sites) say the columbian gets bigger- I was wondering, does that mean slightly bigger, or several inches bigger? I'm thinking of putting them in with big SA cichlids, so I'd like to get the biggest I can.

Does anyone have tips on how to tell which kind the lfs is selling? The cat-elog said the columbians have smaller spots in general, but that's only useful if you've got one the same age of each type to compare.

The other option is to buy them "fully grown". There are shops that sell them at 4-5" here in England, so I expect someone will be able to have them in the US too...

And by the way, the prices for fully grown ones aren't that much more expensive than the small ones, for some reason.

A good LFS will be able to tell you what country they were imported from as they will either have good contact with the wholesaler or be importing themselves. If they're from a transshipper then you've little chance of fidning out.

I'm not sure who's exporting pictus at the moment.
