the smallest Polypterus reaches 35cm or so; but those species are very rare in the trade or never get imported at all.
the more common P ornatipinnis, P delhezi, P senegalensis and P bichir all reach larger sizes.
but in a tank many species top 1 foot and stay at that; allthough the last two can reach 50cm (20") in a big tank.
you'd need a whopping big tank to outgrow them.
apart from that very easy to keep fish; peaceful to other non-Polypterids (they can be territorial to each other), but small tankmates (3" and smaller) might end up as snacks.

Since you're interested in carnivores, how about
. It grows to about 22 cm but its mouth is huge for its size.

Hello. I currently house 4 types of Synodontis with 2 types of Polypterus. Stay away from the Ornate as they can get huge. Try a senegal, albino senegal, or Dehlzi as they dont get much over a foot. For the Syno, I would go with an Angelicus or Eupterus as these can both get 6" or over and prefer solitude. I currently house 1 Poly Ornate,1 Albino Senegal with 6 Syno Multis,1 Syno Brichardi,1 Syno Angelicus, and 1 Syno Granulosus for over 1 year with no problems. Although a 55gal is kinda small for that type of combo, unless its just 1 Bichir and 1 Syno IMO. And BTW Bichirs are not very predatory to fish it cannot swallow whole.Very peaceful as my Ornate lays with my Angelicus all the time.
