I couldn't help notice that the forum replaces most of the characters in the word C-I-C-H-L-I-D. You guys hate cichlids or are just tired of hearing about them?

the attitude of the ones who invented this "joke" is a bit like British music magazins; you either like the Stones OR the Beatles; Blur OR Oasis etc.

They cannot cope with the fact that there's peeps out here who don't let themselves be squeezed into a niche.

haven't seen any c-ichlidsite yet (and I do a lot on those forums) where catfish is c*****h

to prove my point; I got records* of both Stones and Beatles;
and I hate both Blur and Oasis (Britpop; blerghk)



*those big black CD's with grooves in em; you can flip m over and play the other side; but they don't fit in the CD player

It's a joke that engenders a sense of community IF you share the same easygoing sense of humour as a typical Scotman. It probably doesn't translate well across the web, but it certainly doesn't mean we're tired or hate non-catfish species. I've posted a pic of one of my own favourites below.

Perk of being the webmaster, ultimately, I get final say on what's funny or not. Or, indeed, who has an overemotive attitude. I agree about Blur mind you.

No worries guys. It just threw me "for a loop" for a minute. Catfish and c-ichlids mix so well together in both SA and Africa.

I'm a big fan of cichlids too. not quite as much as catfish though, which is probably why i'm here on a catfish forum, and not a cichlid one!!

i think blur are brilliant. i hate oasis though!! (apart from a couple of songs)

actually, i really like the stones too. not a big fan of the beatles.

Most catfish people keep cichlids and most cichlid folks I know also love catfishes. I always liked not permitting cichlid to spelled properly as the American Cichlid Association (ACA) will only recognize catfishes as "scavengers."

PS I have nothing against the ACA and have to say that one of the most enjoyable evenings I have had was spent sitting in a hallway in a hotel during a convention chatting and drinking the night away Wayne Leibel.

Jools, we have to spoil the beans on you; the rest of the world is pretty convinced Scottish people and humour go together like water and oil; but you can enlight us of course

Shane, I know about them keepers looking at catfish as "garbage-men" or "the death of planted tanks" and the like.
you obviously seen too the hundreds of questions like "I need a fish that eats poop" on any c*****d-forum too....
I'm on a solo-cruisade in the Dutch community teaching fishkeepers there's more to cats than mess-ups and scanenging, and having fun all the way.
For example: I often show up at the auctions with a load of catfish-fry and nothing BUT catfishfry on a specialist cichlid-auction.

I have some colorful cichlids that are nice decorations in my catfish tanks, with the added benefit of being able scavengers.
Gives the people who have no patience something to look at when they have their nose pressed against the glass wondering why my catfish won't come out.
I do have more broods of cichlids than catfish to grow out mostly because you can't stop them from breeding given the right conditions.
You "should" be able to say the same for catfish but I do find them more challenging.
Each group have interesting character and I enjoy them both.
I have also spent the morning trying to take pictures of spawning A.sjoestedti with my new camera I have only had for one week.

Also, in different ways they are all potentially superb tankmates for many different species of catfish.
The Biotodoma are like gentle giant Rams, with much more subtlety and character, perfect for the South American community of 20 gallons or more. Looks like the one in the pic is of Peruvian origin looking at the yellow flush, but there are forms to choose from all over Amazonia, into the Orinoco system and even Guyanan coastal rivers.
The Furcifer truly are out there as one of the ultimate aquarium fish, and with these and some Synos you cam imagine yourself at the bottom of lake Tanganyika.
The Crenicichla (looks like a male regani from this angle) belong to one of my favourite groups of fish, and there are species to choose whether you are looking for fish of 3" or 18".

The thing I don't like about biotodoma is that they look like Rams; I hate Rams......

There are several SouthAmerican cichlids I like; Crenicichla's for example, Eartheaters like the colorful Xingu Geophagus for another.

Apisto's, Rams, Discus, Angels and festivums just don't cut it for me; ditto to most Central American species and almost all Malawians (save big Haps; I like big Haps ).

My favourites are indeed Tanganyikans; Tropheus and Featherfins fighting for first place in there.

Keeping those is just another excuse to indulge in truly expenmsive fish however ;
because there's no such thing as a large complete Tanganyikan tank without Synodontis granulosus
