Methylen Blue

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ive surfed the net and ive calculated this

4grams of powder in 1000ml of destilled H2O....

I mixed it in 100ml destilled H2O with 0.4grams/Methylen blue powder wich was the same as 0.8ml/Methylen blue powder if you dont have a good balance..

Remember this is a stock solution wich you should use around 0.2g/liter aquariumwater.

1ml stock solution is approx. 0.9g.

So if you take 1ml stock solution that will be for 4.5liter aquarim water.

so if you normal fish hatching tank is ~20liter you should use ~4.5ml / 4g of the stock solution

Thanks allot for all your answer in his question...

Peter,
Sorry somebody did not have a quick answer (which is hardly the norm around here). I had never heard of Meth Blue powder. I have only seen it sold as a pre-mixed liquid.

The Methylen Blue powder or chelate is sold in pharmasis and labb over in sweden or sold like you said pre mad solution.

I bougt 25g of the powder wich means that i got enough for some yearsand i wont get old since its powder...

Well if anyone took it the wrong way, Im sorry dident mean it....

No problem, Peter. Welcome to Planet Catfish! :D I haven't been around for a few days, or I'd have gotten back to you quicker. I have a liquid methylene blue also. It is from the US manufacturer named Kordon(also called Novalek). But, I don't think the instructions would help you at all, since this is a pre-mixed liquid, too. I know a very little goes a long way. Is there a manufacturer's name on the label of your product? Do they have a web site that might have instructions? If you still have difficulties, please let us know. I'm sure somebody here can help.

I think Peter bought Methylene blue in powder form at the local pharmacy. In Sweden, you can buy all sorts of chemical products in most pharmacies. This is a legacy of the old traditional pharmacy where the doctor would prescribe some medication, and the pharmacist would mix up the ingredients and make pills or a mixture for the patient.

Nowadays, all medecines come pre-fabricated, but the Swedish pharamacies are still able to supply varios useful chemical/lab equipment, such as Methylene blue, hydrochloric and sulphuric acid, beakers and chemistry thermometers.

I think part of this is that it's a government run monopoly to sell medecines in Sweden... Now the counterpart of that is of course Walmart, that sells everything under the sun, as long as it can be sold to LOTS of people. I bet Walmart does not sell Methylene blue, or chemistry style thermometers. But they do stock umpteen variants of toothpaste, as well as common plecos, fish-tanks and shot-guns... ;-) Only a few varieties of toothpaste would be found in a Swedish pharmacy...

The Methylene blue in liquid form is simply a solution of (usually) water and a small proportion of the powder (say 0.5% weight/weight, or in Peter's recipe 0.4% w/w).

A common party "trick" is to add Methylene blue to dark drinks (guiness, coke), and wait for the next day when the participants find that their pee is blue... ;-)
