Stumbled across the site after looking for information about my Channel Cat "Bob". I was sold him by the local Pet shop as a bottom feeder around 2 years ago and have been astounded by his growth rate and he is soon to be rehoused in his own 4 foot tank. Although he scares the kids (must be the "rasping" of his gums on your finger!!) he is a quality fish and full of character, though I am wary of the potential size he can reach in a few more years.
Does anyone in the UK keep these fish in outdoor ponds? Do they survive our winters?
Any help and advice gratefully received.

channel cats can survive extreme temp. We have 25 pound channels in our 3 acre lake and they survived this past winter when our lake froze 2 inches.

Yes they will survive in a pond especially in your area.

Because of this no more will be allowed into the UK without special documentation and license. and I believe the fine for releasing these fish into the wild in the UK is £5000.
(just general info.,not saying that you are planning this)

Bob has a fond liking of worms but seems to miss out due to a large goldfish he currently shares his present tank with. Any tips on how he can get his share without losing out to the much quicker goldfish?
I seem to recall a story a few years back regarding a catfish being netted in Stanley Park Liverpool weighing around 9lb...scary thought.
