Hi all,

Last night I was watching the National Geographic Channel which aired a program about the Roraima mountains in Guyana. The program, called "The Lost World", showed some very interesting sceneries, such as the plateus on top of the Roraima and it's surrounding peaks. The fast flowing waters of this landscape must surely be the home to some interesting fish? This made me wonder if anyone ever did some research on the catfish-fauna of this area. It's clearly a very remote and difficult to access place, so it would seem only few people ever went there. Does anybody know anything about this subject?

There are fish at the base of the tepuis (of which Roraima is one), but none on top. They are not very well explored for their fish fauna.

Fish like (and N. roraima) are found at the bases of the tepuis.

In May of 1989 national Geographic Magazine had an article about the Tepuis in this area,it is still my favourite one and probably responsible for me wanting to get out and explore the world.(when I can get away)

I did some collecting with Charles Brewer-Carias in Venezuela. He has spent most of his lifetime exploring the tepuys and I would imagine he must be mentioned in any documentry on the subject. Charles has invited me several times on expeditions, but these are not simple affairs and it is hard for me to chek out of life for a month or more to participate. Charles has described what must be trichomycterids that he has found on the tepuys. He is a botanist though and does not usually pack fish collecting gear. As HH pointed out, I am sure there are still many, many neat fishes to be discovered around the bases as well.
