Your fishes will love you. Feed them sparingly however and not too often.

my fish love whole shrimp, but i always wonder if the calcium carbonate in the shells will affect the hardness in a soft water tank by any significant amount?

I dont think shrimp shells are actually carbonates. Things like clams are, and the shells are very different. Even clams would have a minimal effect unless the tank was very small and very soft water. (but then you wouldnt be feeding whole clams anyway)

I feed my BN pair shimp about once a week and they tear into it like they're starving. They get pretty round afterwards, so it's just zuccini and driftwood for several days after. I've heard that shrimp is very good at facilitating growth and conditioning fish for breeding.
