Hey everyone, just picked up this little guy at the LFS, they didn't know what it was so they told me $3.99. Couldn't pass it up in case it's a good find. It's currently ~3.5". Here is the pic. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Looks like either a common () or a gibby (). Bit hard to tell with all that stress coloration.

I'll see if I can get a better pic, I picked him up because he deffinitely did not look like a common, it has brown stripes going down it's sides and on it's fins.

Ok, here are a couple better pics, at least they show the coloration.

I counted the dorsal rays, it's 11 or 12 (can't quite see the last ones), which means that it's definitely of Pterogoplichthys genus, but I'm not quite sure which specie it would be. Have a look at genus thumbnails for Pterogoplichthys.

Hey thanks for the reply, I looked at those pics and I did not see one that looks like it, or at least to me it doesn't look like it. I only saw two with any type of red on them and they had a totally different pattern.

Here is a better view of the dorsal fin.

Ok, so counting the EXACT number of dorsal rays won't help, since anything with more than 10 is definitely of the Pterogoplichtys genus, all other (similar) genera have 7-8 rays.

What size is your fish? There are several of them that change colour as they grow... For example, look at the Juvenile and adults of .

That is a big difference in the Juvie and adult, I know they changed but that is dramatic.

Mine is a Juvie, only 3.5". So I guess I'm going to need to wait till it becomes an adult before I can figure out what it is.

Well it might be a common afterall. I did some searching and found this site. Look at the pic to the right, it has similar yet faint red markings. Even if it is a common it's the best looking common I have seen.
