Got a Christmas present from my fish a day or so early! I found the male guarding a clutch yesterday. Took a pretty good shot of the action tonight.

Right after this I reached in his tank to pull a few snails out. He actually came storming out with his odontoades flared. Then backed in with just his head out and his weapons aready! And I had just unplugged the camera!

Congrats on the spawn! They are so funny when the attack the only thing around that means them no harm....we look forward to the spawns :) and try to help them.

I had one that used to take exception to me cleaning the tank with a vaccum hose. He would really go nuts and attack the tube like mad!

I changed the hose from a green one to a black one purely out of need one day and he never attacked. Next week I used the green tube and sure enough it turns out he has a major dislike for GREEN TUBES!

Go figure?

Kind Regards

This fry is from the first spawn, about a month ago. He found a nice secure spot, hiding between the bubble walls.

Looks like a pretty good hatch! Dads doing a great job. That one that wiggled out of the cave was pushed back in by the male using his nose.

The L183's are tough! The two females look very full, but the male won't take a cave. He just hangs under some driftwood. I've even seen one female dancing in front of a cave right next to him. Nothing.

Did someone mention L183? I haven't been following this thread, but "woke up" when I read the mention of spawning L183...and the response about them being tougher.
Yup...couldn't agree more.
I killed no less than 2 dozen over the last few years, just trying to keep them alive. Finally, in Spring of 2005, my Ancistrus dolichopterus finally paid me back with 2 nice batches of over 40 fish each. I thought that was it, but at Thanksgiving, I got another batch.

Keep at it. My new slogan pertaining to suckermouths is "They don't do anything fast".

Kevin, Did you do anything to trigger your L183s?
