What does the squeak sound like?

Do Petricola's make the squeak that gave some Syno's their common name?

What does it sound like? Bird? Cricket? Squeaky floor?

What causes them to make the noise? Happiness? Terror? Love?

I had a polypterus ornatipinnis that chowed down a few young Synodontis eupterus. I had expected the spines to be sufficient defense, but the bicher thought otherwise. The poor little Syno's would squeak when the bicher caught them, almost like they were calling for help.

Very cool recording! So they squeak when they are afraid? It makes me think of a sound dolphins make.

They've also been known to squeak when netted, though mine never have. If they aren't disturbed too much, they're quiet :D

All I hear from the link is a brief scraping... when I kept angelicus and decorus, I would hear what sounded almost like a warble of some kind. I thought it was the Synos, but I never confirmed it.

It was the synos. My big decorus would "bawl me out" if I changed more than 25 percent of the water at one time, probably too much change in one of the parameters. She also hollered when handled or netted or if I drained the water to just a few inches as for moving the tank. That sound was like an owl or more maybe a deep throated cricket, if you can imagine such a thing.
