That's a hybrid of some kind.

went looking in the index, said there was a small spot variety.

he's very active swins day/night, not bothered by mbuna.

i dont relly like the idea of hybrids, but as he's on his own it isnt a problem

also, the dots are onlt on the top, underneath is a creamy colour

i have to say that this fish doesn't look like any hybrid I ever saw (most look like multipunc-nigrita-mixups), but it's eerie.

maybe a picture of the head including the humeral would help?
those humerals should use like fingerprints; if we get a pic of the humeral of the true nigromaculatus and compare it with this beastie....

dislike it as I do, I have to admit if this is a hybrid, it's a darn goodlookin' one.

I can see small differences with the nigro's in the catelog; but those are from small and quite thin specimen. a wellfed adult nigromaculatus might look quite different.

also; this is a species with a wide distribution; it's the only species native to Tanganyika wich is not an endemic but also occurs in African rivers in neighbourcountries like the Congo....variable species?

will go and get some extra shots now, bit hard to get decent photos as he's camera shy.

also the colour i a bit mucked up, as i'm using flash, he tends to look greyer than the photo appears,

My guess is no.

Aside from the white edge dorsal, there are no spots on the pectoral, ventral, and anal fins.

Also the pictures of Synodontis nigromaculatus I've seen all have denser, more irregular, leopard type spots. Note the linear, lateral line of spots.

But I'm no expert ...

I'm sticking by my original diagnosis. The nearly-black pectoral fins are a dead giveaway.

oh well.

if hes a hybrid he'll just have to live there as he is, not big on trying to breed fish( dont like the idea of culling fry/fish)
