My pair of p. typus spawned 3 or 4 times. But this last time they really care for eggs and fry - for 2.5 weeks they show to me splendid and perfect parental care I've never seen in any other fish. And today morning I woke up and notice that entrance to the cave is all messed up (sand which blocked entrance was gone but also surroundings of a cave looks like after a war) - it was almost closed for whole this time so I was barely able to see anything. So I peek inside the cave to see male and female with empty mouths ;(. I thought that maybe they release fry but I didn't find any.

I must honestly say that I feel guilty because I fall asleep learning tonight and didn't feed parents and didn't give newly hatched BS for fry - this could be a reason? Damn this freaking exams :(

Well, I'd like to see some response to your original question, and I have one of my own.

I purchased six typus at about 2". They have grown, and fought, and grown more. They are in a 75 gallon, and now it appears two have paired off finally. These two always are together in a PVC tube, and rub together quite a bit.

The thing is, they look an awful lot alike in body size, though one is a bit more wide bodied then the other.

Everything I've read suggests the males are bigger, but is it possible that they can be near the same size?

They are currently busy with the latest offering from a Convict pair's monthly contribution to my breeding attempts of the typus.

P typus are similar in length, unlike Lophiobagrus.

they sure look alike a lot, right up to the point where I cannot see the difference between an old thin female (dark and big0 and a young adult make (ditto).

it's the girth indeed that separates females. I had (!) a breeding pair for a long time, they gave me dozens of fry over a long period. but they were like peas in a pod; when 1 died I couldn't see what the other one was, until I gave them to Dhonti and he added them to his two P typus.
once we could compare it turned out that the male had died and the female was left alone.
