Re-animating brineshrimp!

Today I was preparing the usual sunday dinner for my fish, bloodworm, daphnia and brineshrimp (all frozen as here it is damn near impossible to find live food). To my surprise, once everything had defrosted in the jar of water, I spotted movement. On closer inspection I noticed that 3 or 4 brineshrimp were swimming around in there! Is this normal? I know there are a few animals that can survive freezing (scorpions, krill, some african grasshoppers) but never noticed live brineshrimp among the de-frosted ones before

No, it is not normal. The cysts of artemia are extremely resistant and handle freezing fine, but the adults don't, unfortunately. My only guess is that you accidentally got a very freshly frozen bag of artemia, and that you thawed some out which hadn't had time to freeze through.
