Just wondering if zinc coated screws would be ok to use to mount drift wood to slate or if it would be bad for the fish??

I bought a stainless steel screw at the hardware store for .20 USD for just this purpose. Why take the chance with anything else when you can be sure for less than a quarter?

Zinc coated screws are OK until the zink wears/corrodes off - which will happen at some point in time. How you know that there's sufficient zinc on the non-visible area is the problem.

I agree with drgold: Use stainles screws, and you avoid the problem of trying to figure out when the screws are too old to work OK

Also, wash screws with washing up liquid to remove any oil or such that was used during production, then rinse them with plenty of water...
