Synonym/Common name editing feature?

Is there any reason why Synonyms can't be entered on the "Edit Catelog"? Likewise for common names?

I do understand that it may not be straightforward to just "allow anyone to add them", but adding them to the list of things that can be edited wouldn't hurt, would it? Even if you have to enter them manually for some reason, having them listed with any other changes for a species would be handy, I would have thought...

Yes, I plan to add these features as well as edit image captions, but these are different database tables and it requires a lot more work than just adding a field like "general notes".

For general interest, here is a screenshot I posted elsewhere that shows the admin screen used to compare existing "live" data with a submission and allows the admin to vet the data, add anything new and ultimately submit to live.

Image.

This is where all entries submitted by the data team end up!

Another thing I should do is remove the "edit" link so that you cannot edit data if a submission is pending...

Yes and no. A marker/dialog box saying "Submission pending" is probably a good idea. However, I quite often (being all too human) end up sending two submissions for the same species - perhaps I click "Submit" and when I receive the e-mail confirmation realize that I missed something, or I have on occasion hit enter to fill in a field, but it also submits it [I'm sure this is a "forms-in-web-browser" problem].

This is hard work! Is there any opinion on which would be more use (best implemtned first)? I have just spent three days building a "move an image from one species to another" function and think each of these two new functions will take about the same time.

What do you want an opinion on? The synonym/common name entry, or the submission pending part?

I started writing a long reply explaining why I don't want you to stop submissions when one is pending, but I think you're not discussing that... ;-)

Sorry, yes, I meant common names Vs synonyms. I just started on the common names thing. For now it is allowing you to input or amend existing common names, this will be online today.

Then I will work on synonyms.

I don't really have a preference. I don't often add/ammend common names, but I do sometimes find that synonyms are wrong - but it's not often enough that I feel that it needs to be done soon - I just post in the Cat-eLog forum instead, and you can do it by hand... ;-)

Hopefully you'll find that the Synonyms are easier once you've done the common names ;-)

Well, I've done it. It was a long haul. So...

a) You can now edit common names or add a new one.
b) You can now edit synonyms or add a new one.
c) You can now edit generic level pronunciation info.
d) You can now edit generic level etymology info.

Please feel free to add in synonyms that, for example Marc has posted, or perhaps Marc will do this. But don't go nuts until the first few are in and it is all OK. There are a couple of data issues with the synonym table that might yet cause a problem.

Is there a possibility to add several synonyms to a species that didn't have synonyms before?
I tried , but changed it all back because I was making a mess of it. Anyway, this species should have 4 synonyms. How do I do that?

Can I just request that the Type Locality is moved down to be closer in relation to the Reference section [or the synonym/common name bits be moved to some other place]. Right now, type locality is between common names and synonyms, when it (at least in my opinion) feels better to have near the "references" section.

Marc, I just realized that the Synonym entry isn't the way it first appears...

The entry for Synonym is a single line with:
Genus species author year

If you want to enter multiple synonyms, it seems like you have to do it multiple times.

It also means that I have entered them wrong in my previous entries...

Jools: Can you let me know if I need to re-enter them, or if it's easy for you to fix them up...

Just to finalise this and say that the issue with ' characters in submissions is now fixed too.
