I was at my local LFS yesterday - buying kelp pellets for my new longfin bristlenose fry...and he had gotten some new plecs in.

One he had advertised as a Peppermint. I have one Peppermint and he's black with bigger white spots. But this guy was more dark grey, not quite black (I realize they can be various shades) but had LOTS Of small light blue spots. I'm thinking - is it possible he is a blue spot plec? His spots were half the size of a pinhead, whereas my Peppermint I have already, his spots are about the size of a pinhead and clearly are white. This guy's were clearly light electric blue. He was $36

I can't identify your 'peppermint' small spots but I have a question I could not find an answer for in the search feature. There are many species of 'peppermints' on the market.
What is a peppermint bristle nose L-number identification?
They seem to be common in Australia and else where. Fairly easy to breed, it sounds like a good one to add to my pleco breeding projects in my fishroom. Please post the L-no., if you know it. There are too many dark body light spotted plecos for only a description to go by.
As a corollary, does anyone know of a source in the USA for "peppermint' bristle nose? A pm would be fine.

That is NOT an Ancistrus, but it is in the subfamily Ancistrinae.

There are, as Larry says, MANY Ancistrus species that are black with varying size spots, and without a location to help the identification, it's near impossible to find the corect species. Since the ones bred in Australia has been bred there for a long time, I'm not even sure that we could find the correct L-number for them.

Of course, if someone knows, I'll try to update the Cat-eLog with the common name on that species.
