un-natural branching of barbels

Are there any specific reasons why a mandibular barbel of a catfish (e.g. S Multipunctatus)would branch to form two end tips?

I have noticed a few more than usual in dealers tanks with this appearing - this includes definate wild fish as well as 'quality' tank bred fish, as opposed to purely poor quality stock.

Any thoughts?

It infrequently happens naturally in most catfishes. I would expect species with branched barbels (mochokids/doradids) to be more prone to this.

Thanks - it may be that i've only just really noticed it & not conciously noticed it before.
