fluorescent lighting

I'm outraged. We bought a 5 gallon aquarium tank with hood and lighting 4 months ago. The fluorescent tube burnt out yesterday and the pet shop is asking for $18 to not only replace the tube but the whole lighting fixture. My husband went to an electrical shop and bought a fluorescent tube for $2.00. He's just working on refitting it. Has anyone else had this problem?

Consumer complaints and vendor diservice is a fact of modern life.
For only a five gallon tank a standard incandescent socket can use a 6700K ten watt screw socket compact fluorescent lamp for $5.00 from Wally World's pet dept. It will give good service life of about 2 years. Plants grow well, they're cool running and have very good color rendering index.
